Wayland High School art students have earned 42 Scholastic Art Awards this year

Wayland High School art students have earned 42 Scholastic Art Awards this year! This is a record for our school.

Students from public, private and home school environments enter this statewide competition. Art judged to be in the top 10% wins an Honorable Mention award. Work in the top 6% wins a Silver Key and the top 3% of artwork from across the state wins a Gold Key.

Silver Key and Gold Key winners are eligible to participate in the Massachusetts Regional Awards Celebration on March 12, at the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston. ONLY Gold Key work will be exhibited at EF (Education First) Two Education Circle, Cambridge, MA 02141 (near the Science Museum), from March 5–March 20, 2016. Gold Key work will continue on electronically to New York to compete against all the other Gold Key Winners from the other regions of the country. At the National level, work can win a GOLD MEDAL or a SILVER MEDAL. National Awards are announced in Mid-March.

Four students, Dasha Bobrova- HM, Annice Kim-HM, Calvin Laituri-HM and Larissa Sehringer SK, also won awards for their portfolios consisting of 8 pieces of art. (The image listed is just one of their portfolio pieces.)

The complete listing of all the winners across the state can be found online here. Winners among Wayland students are listed below, and a gallery of images of the winning artwork is shown below the table. Click on any image to go to a carousel of full-size images.

How was the work judged?

  • Originality: Work that breaks from convention blurs the boundaries between genres, and challenges notions of how a particular concept or emotion can be expressed.
  • Technical Skill: Work that uses technique to advance an original perspective or a personal vision or voice, and show skills being utilized to create something unique, powerful, and innovative.
  • Personal Vision or Voice: Work with an authentic and unique point of view and style.

All work is judged blindly, meaning the judge does not know what school the student attends, the student’s name, race, gender, or any other information about the student.
