In the News…

News from the past week
  • * Voters take a step to ban recreational marijuana. After months of discussion, voters decided decisively to take the first of two steps to ban recreational marijuana businesses in town. The measure to ban passed, 1,226 to 465, according to unofficial results from the town clerk’s office after Tuesday’s special election.

  • * Last week we included a link the article “Petition targets Wayland Rod and Gun Club“. For clarification, FinCom and the petitioners have noted that by-laws regulate future uses of land or property, not existing ones. This article, therefore, does not affect existing sites, and so would not affect the Rod & Gun Club.

Please note: some links may be available through a pay-wall. When possible, we will use links that are available to all readers.

How you can help…

Dignity Matters seeks donations for fall drive. Dignity Matters is a Framingham-based charity that supplies feminine hygiene products and underwear to women and school-age girls living in homeless or low-income situations, to help them stay healthy, regain self-confidence, and live with basic dignity. Dignity Matters regularly supports over 50 homeless shelters, more than 100 scattered sites for families, domestic violence shelters, and food pantries throughout greater Boston and Metrowest.  In 2017, we collected over 260,000 items but it’s still not enough to meet the demand. We need YOUR help! During the month of October, you can support Dignity Matters and the thousands of women we support by bringing donations of pads, tampons, new underwear (with tags) and new or gently used bras to the following locations:

common art Show and Sale on Sunday, October 14 in Weston
St. Peter’s in Weston is hosting a common art Show and Sale on Sunday, October 14th from 11:30am-1:30pm.  common art is a program providing space, materials, and caring staff to support unhoused and low-income individuals as they develop their artistic abilities.  For most members, common art is a singular chance to express their artistic gifts. For some, art is a professional path, interrupted and suspended by calamity and homelessness. For others, it’s an opportunity to express unheard opinions, ideas and truths. For many, its pure joy, an oasis of form and color in otherwise dry times. For all, its a simple and welcome relief from daily difficulty.  People who live in shelters, rooming houses, on unclaimed benches, and on Boston’s streets gather every Wednesday at Emmanuel Church on Newbury Street to draw, paint, sculpt, make crafts, and to share with other artists in like circumstances. Come meet and support the artists of common art as they show their paintings, jewelry, knitted items, drawings and more.  All work is for sale and proceeds go directly to the artists.  CASH ONLY due to artists’ circumstances.  St. Peter’s is located at 320 Boston Post Rd. in Weston.

Become a Tutor of English. Have you ever thought about tutoring someone in English? Most people who decide to become tutors are thinking of the good it can do, helping others become more proficient in English and better able to cope with employment, landlords, schools or the medical profession. But then they discover the rewards, the satisfaction that comes as progress is made and a relationship develops that enriches both learner and tutor. Tutors often speak of their pleasure in learning about another culture and their greater appreciation for the challenges facing those who are adapting to ours.
Because of the constant demand for tutoring, all available tutors are now working with students, and the next tutor-training course has been scheduled. ESOL (English for Speakers of Other Languages) program director Ginny Steel is currently enrolling prospective tutors for the five-session course that starts on October 15. The class will meet at the Wayland Library on five Monday evenings 6-9pm. Class dates this fall are October 15, 22 and 29 and November 5 and 19 (not meeting on Veterans Day). No prior knowledge of a foreign language is needed, just an openness to other cultures and the desire to share your knowledge of English. The training is free, although it is necessary to purchase a textbook for about $20.
For more information or to enroll in the tutor-training course, you can phone Ginny Steel at 508-358-7517 or email her at virginia@thesteels.com.
Resources for ESL tutors and learners are available online here.

The Wayland Community Fund serves Wayland residents who need financial assistance.  The WCF is a volunteer organization that provides assistance to Wayland residents in financial need, paying utility bills, rent, medical expenses and many other items.  It pays bills, it does not provide cash. The organization was originally funded by a bequest from the late Suzanne Leavitt.   Contributions from Wayland residents now provide sufficient funding. The WCF is staffed by five volunteers who cover all expenses.  As a result, 100% of every contribution goes toward helping people in Wayland.  Since its founding 20 years ago the WCF has provided more than $550,000 to Wayland residents in financial need. The Wayland Community Fund can be reached at 508-358-3624.More information on the fund, including who it serves, and how to donate, is available on the Wayland town website  online here.

Vokes Players announce auditions for Peter and the Starcatcher
By Rick Elice
Director: Katie Swimm
Musical Director: Jeff Kimball
A young orphan and his mates are shipped off from Victorian England to a distant island ruled by the evil King Zarboff. They know nothing of the mysterious trunk in the captain’s cabin, which contains a precious, otherworldly cargo. At sea, the boys are discovered by a precocious young girl named Molly, a Starcatcher-in-training who realizes that the trunk’s precious cargo is starstuff, a celestial substance so powerful that it must never fall into the wrong hands. When the ship is taken over by pirates – led by the fearsome Black Stache, a villain determined to claim the trunk and its treasure for his own – the journey quickly becomes a thrilling adventure. Auditions. Auditions will be held at Beatrice Herefords Vokes Theatre, 97 Boston Post Road, Wayland, MA 01778 on Sunday, November 4 (5-8pm) and Monday, November 5 (7-10pm).  To audition, signup for an audition time online here.  For complete details, click here.

Vokes Players Announces its Production of A Day in Hollywood/A Night in the Ukraine
Performances will be held at Beatrice Herford’s Vokes Theatre, Route 20 in Wayland from November 1 through November 17, Thursday-Saturday evenings at 8pm with a 2pm matinee on Saturdays, November 10 & 17.  For tickets and information call 508-358-4034, or order online via their website www.vokesplayers.org.  Ticket prices are $23 for Thursday evenings and Saturday matinees; $28 for Friday & Saturday evenings. A Day in Hollywood/A Night in the Ukraine is actually two shows in one. Act One is a rollicking musical review that celebrates the bygone movie era when Fred Astaire and Irving Berlin reigned. It’s jam-packed with music written for this show, as well as some old standards from the movies. Act Two is a comedy that owes a large, huge, enormous debt to the Marx Brothers. Because, in fact, it’s a farce styled after and starring characters right out of a Marx Brothers movie. This is a Night – and a Day – to just have fun.

Walk or bike the new Rail Trail between Russell’s Crossing (Town Center) and the Tower Hill Station site (Plain Road). Although the Central Massachusetts Railroad has been described as “a railroad that should never have been built,” Wayland enjoyed passenger train service from 1881 to 1971; freight service continued until 1980.  Guides posted at the Tower Hill station site, the cattle pass, the freight house, the Wayland Depot, and at the turntable and water tank will explain how it all worked.  At Town Center MassEnergize will have ecars and ebikes to see and drive and free bike tune-ups.  Russell’s annual Pond Sale will be that day.
