Wayland, Let’s Do Lunch! Every weekday in Wayland a dedicated team of volunteers criss-crosses the town delivering hot meals to residents who find it hard to grocery shop or cook for themselves. The benefits go far beyond nutrition for both recipients and volunteers. Many relationships span years. Take a look (https://youtu.be/avk694Etx1Q).  Get to know some Wayland residents you might not meet otherwise, and meet some important needs in your community. It takes about an hour. To volunteer to deliver Meals on Wheels – regularly, seasonally, or as an on-call substitute – contact Volunteer Coordinator Ann Gordon at the Wayland Council on Aging, 508-358-2990.  Flyer online here

The Wayland Community Fund serves Wayland residents who need financial assistance.  The WCF is a volunteer organization that provides assistance to Wayland residents in financial need, paying utility bills, rent, medical expenses and many other items.  It pays bills, it does not provide cash. The organization was originally funded by a bequest from the late Suzanne Leavitt.   Contributions from Wayland residents now provide sufficient funding. The WCF is staffed by five volunteers who cover all expenses.  As a result, 100% of every contribution goes toward helping people in Wayland.  Since its founding 20 years ago the WCF has provided more than $550,000 to Wayland residents in financial need. The Wayland Community Fund can be reached at 508-358-3624.More information on the fund, including who it serves, and how to donate, is available on the Wayland town website  online here.

Vokes Players Announce Their Production of The Nance, directed by Donnie Baillargeon. Performances will be held at Beatrice Herford’s Vokes Theatre from July 19 through August 4, Thursday-Saturday evenings at 8pm with a 2pm matinee on Saturdays, July 28 and August 4. For tickets and information call 508-358-4034, or order online here. Ticket prices are $19 for Thursday evenings and Saturday matinees; $22 for Friday and Saturday evenings. Chauncey Miles is a burlesque show “nance” – a stock comedic character often played as a campy caricature of a gay man. Chauncey himself is a not-very-closeted gay man in 1937, who loves his work, loves his co-workers like family, loves his independence as an artist, and also loves Mayor Fiorello LaGuardia and the other New York Republicans. But the Mayor decides that indecency must be rooted out, and clamps down on “deviance” in New York theaters, threatening the life that Chauncey has built around himself – and perhaps his chance at real love. Douglas Carter Beane’s play focuses on a man in the prime of his life, doing work he enjoys, living his life fully, harming nobody and yet condemned by a government and society that do not know or understand him. The Vokes Players is a non-profit theatrical organization. The Nance is the last production of our 2017-18 season. The theatre is wheelchair accessible. For more information about the Vokes Players, visit www.vokesplayers.org.
