Dignity Matters
Mission:to assist homeless women and girls by providing underwear and feminine hygiene products when they need them most. Through our action we support women in regaining self-confidence and dignity by helping them stay healthy and clean.
The Wayland Children and Parents Association (WCPA) is a community organization that helps bring families with young children together for fun, education and support. We welcome you to participate in the fun by joining the WCPA.
A summer of outdoor concert series in Wayland and surrounding towns gets underway. This week, Wayland kicks off its series with Southbound Train on Thursday evening outside the Wayland Town Building, and Weston starts their season with an ice cream social and Classic Groove on the Weston Town Green.

* Warnings in Wayland about recreational marijuana. Panelists at a community forum Tuesday night said allowing recreational marijuana businesses in town will create a variety of different headaches. Health problems, especially for adolescents, and increased risk of fatal car accidents were some of the warnings given by a panel of town officials and doctors at the Town Building.
* ‘Moms With Amazing Kids’ For Special Needs Kids In Wayland. When Marissa Picariello was born, in 2014, she was healthy and beautiful, with big brown eyes and a full head of hair. It wasn’t until she was about six months old that her parents became concerned. Her development seemed delayed, and she had recurring involuntary movements. * MetroWest communities to study climate change risks. Four local communities will use state grant money to better prepare for the effects of climate change, examining how flooding, drought, insect-borne diseases and other hazards could become more prevalent in the future. Framingham, Marlborough, Sudbury and Wayland are among 82 cities and towns participating in the state’s Municipal Vulnerability Preparedness program. Each will receive money to assess its vulnerability to climate change and develop resiliency plans, with technical support, climate change data and planning tools provided by the state.
HATS OFF Donation Campaign for Wayland Public Schools Foundation
Thinking about year-end teacher gifts? Looking for a way to acknowledge a special teacher or staff member? HATS Off is the answer! Making a donation to the Wayland Public Schools Foundation is a perfect way to say “Thank You!” to that special teacher or staff member. For over 30 years, the Wayland Public Schools Foundation (WPSF) has supported teachers by funding classroom innovations and creative units of study not covered by the regular school budget. Make a donation to the HATS Off campaign, and a personalized certificate will be sent to the faculty member(s) of your choice. The donation amount will not be disclosed. Wayland Library seeks volunteers for next year’s Girls Who Code Club. The Wayland Library Girls Who Code Club is looking for volunteer facilitators for the 2018-2019 academic year. Affiliated with the national Girls Who Code organization (girlswhocode.com) and its mission of closing the gender gap in technology, the Wayland club brings together middle and high school girls for hands-on learning about code and technology. Enthusiasm for working with the girls is required; technical skill is helpful but not necessary, especially if you are willing to learn along with them. If you are interested, or would like to know more, please contact Head of Youth Services Pam McCuen. If you want to be notified when registration starts for next year’s club, contact Pam as well.
Bringing the World to Wayland through AFS. AFS has been a leader in international high school student exchange for more than 70 years. Each year, AFS-USA sends approximately 1,100 US students abroad, provides $3 million in scholarships and financial aid, including US Department of State sponsored scholarships, and welcomes 2,300 international high school students who come to study in U.S. high schools and live with host families. More than 5,000 volunteers in the U.S. make the work of AFS possible. Learn more about this year’s exchange students online here.
Girl Scouts seek parent volunteers. We are forming Girl Scout troops for all three elementary schools for the fall. We are in need of parent volunteers to help with new Kindergarten Daisy Troops and depending on the school, 1st, 2nd, and 3rd-grade troops as well. If you have a rising Kindergartner, 1st, 2nd or 3rd grader interested in Scouting, please join us at an informal, informational wine and cheese reception to meet other interested parents and learn more about what is involved. Help Wayland Residents On Your Schedule. If you’re looking for a vital volunteer role serving your fellow Waylanders that you can do on an “as available” basis, FISH may be just the group for you. Friends in Service Helping – FISH – is a Council on Aging volunteer group that arranges for and provides rides for Wayland residents to medical appointments when they have no other way to get there. FISH volunteers can be drivers or telephone volunteers, working from home to match clients with available drivers. We are looking for more of both! The client is responsible for any tolls or parking expenses. Registration Now Available for Youth in Philanthropy Summer Institute
Do you know a middle or high school student in MetroWest looking for something fun to do this summer while giving back to the community? Registration is now open for the Foundation for MetroWest’s Youth in Philanthropy Summer Institute. The Foundation is offering separate sessions for middle school and high school students this summer from June 25 to June 29. Sessions are held at Framingham State University and run daily, 9am-4pm.
The Youth in Philanthropy Summer Institute is a five-day leadership development experience that offers MetroWest area students a unique way to get involved in their community, make new friends and build skills that will help in school, college and beyond. Registration will be open online through May 25 or until program spots are filled and can be found online here. Students living in MetroWest in grades 6 through 12 are eligible to register. Join the Wayland Student Corps
Student corps is an organization that organizes and hosts community service activities. We welcome all students to join the Wayland High School Student Corps for an opportunity to better our community and earn your president award, a prestigious award that recognizes the service of volunteers. This year alone we have participated in and organized numerous events that were able to positively impact our town; this included the donation of more than 15 full bags of canned goods to Wayland Parmenter Food pantry and the cleaning of the area around WMS and the Wayland railroad site. The Wayland Community Fund serves Wayland residents who need financial assistance. The WCF is a volunteer organization that provides assistance to Wayland residents in financial need, paying utility bills, rent, medical expenses and many other items. It pays bills, it does not provide cash. The organization was originally funded by a bequest from the late Suzanne Leavitt. Contributions from Wayland residents now provide sufficient funding. The WCF is staffed by five volunteers who cover all expenses. As a result, 100% of every contribution goes toward helping people in Wayland. Since its founding 20 years ago the WCF has provided more than $550,000 to Wayland residents in financial need. Please join the School Committee for a presentation by field design firm Weston & Sampson on the latest plans for the proposed High School Fields and Athletic Facilities Renovation. The proposed project includes replacement of the current artificial turf field, renovation of the stadium, swapping and renovation of the tennis courts and softball field, the addition of a second outdoor basketball court and associated parking, and updated lighting.
This forum will allow residents to gain an understanding of the overall project and any related impact to the neighbors.

Journalism Camp:Wayland High School students are offering a four-session Summer Journalism Camp for Wayland Public School students entering Grades 8 and 9 in the fall. There is no charge for the program, which will focus on journalism and public speaking and be held July 2-6. Each morning session will run 9-11:30am. There is no class on July 4. Join the Fun at Outdoor Summer Concert Series. Wayland’s 7th annual free Summer Community Concert Series begins Thursday, June 14 at 7pm in the Town Building courtyard and continues on the following four Thursdays. Bring a chair or blanket, and come enjoy some great music with your friends and neighbors. This summer’s line-up includes some old favorites and some new bands that are sure to please:

Democratic Candidates for State Senate to Debate, Tuesday, June 12
The Wayland Democratic Town Committee is co-hosting a debate this coming Tuesday with the three Democratic candidates looking to make their case to the voters as to why they should succeed Republican incumbent Richard Ross as our State Senator: Kris Aleksov, an attorney from Wayland, Jackie Katz, a Wellesley High School teacher from Norfolk, and Becca Rausch, an attorney from Needham. The debate will be on June 12, 7-8:45pm at the Morse Institute Library, 14 E. Central St., Natick, in the Lebowitz meeting hall on the lower level of the library. The debate will be moderated by MetroWest Daily News editor Anne Brennan. Doors open at 6:30pm. The debate is open to the public and Democratic voters in our Norfolk, Bristol, and Middlesex State Senate district are urged to attend. The candidates will spend about an hour responding to questions from the audience. Suggested questions may be submitted at the debate or in advance online here. Each candidate will also have time for an opening and closing statement. The winner of the September 4 Primary will run in November against the Republican incumbent Richard Ross of Wrentham for the Norfolk, Bristol and Middlesex Senate District, which includes all of Wayland and runs south to Attleboro through parts of Natick, Needham, Wellesley and five other towns. The voter registration deadline for the September 4 Democratic Primary is Wednesday, August 15, at 5pm.
Ma’yan Tikvah to Launch Y’ladim BaTeva – A Children’s Outdoor Jewish Education Program This Fall
This September, Ma’yan Tikvah – A Wellspring of Hope is launching an alternative Jewish education program called Y’ladim BaTeva. It will be targeted at elementary school-aged children and will include a significant outdoor component. The ten-month program will be open to all families seeking a Jewish education program for their children, and will be comprised of weekend outdoor classes, weekday online classes, and family Shabbat programs. Children will learn Jewish values and selected prayers, study the Bible, sing songs, and learn basic Hebrew words and letters. An optional, more traditional Hebrew decoding and prayer program will also be made available. More details are available online here.

Spotlight on: Restructuring Town Government. For the past two years, the Town has been working with the Collins Center for Public Management on improving the efficiency and effectiveness of our financial and administrative operations. Some of their proposals are already being implemented. This is an ongoing process which will hopefully culminate in a more streamlined town government. Join us as the Chair of the Selectmen, Lea Anderson, and Town Administrator Nan Balmer explain this initiative, in the first of several discussions on this important subject. Airs beginning June 17. Registration is currently open for all Wayland Little League summer baseball programs. With leagues available for boys and girls at all ability levels from ages 7-16, it’s the perfect opportunity for beginners to learn the game and experienced players to improve their skills. Plus, each program has a convenient, flexible schedule that limits conflicts with other summer activities.

Lifelong Learners to hold information session, Tuesday, June 26
Lifelong Learners: An Independent Collaborative (LLAIC) invites all retired people to attend an information session on Tuesday, June 26 from 10 a.m. – 12:30. At this event which will be held at Temple Shir Tikva, 141 Boston Post Road, where we rent rooms for our classes, you can learn about the stimulating courses and exciting extra-curricular activities this group offers and even sample a mini version of several courses. LLAIC is an independent, secular, lifelong learning program serving greater Boston and the MetroWest suburbs. The fall semester, our 9th, will begin on Tuesday, September 25 and continue for 10 weeks. Recreation Passes to Start Parks: Did you know that Wayland Recreation offers a free day-parking pass to any of the 440 Massachusetts State Parks? These are offered through the Massachusetts Department of Conservation and Recreation (DCR). Reserve or pick up the pass at 10am on a weekday and return it the next business day by 10am. Check

Museum Passes from the Friends of the Wayland Library: The Friends of the Wayland Public Library support an extensive list of museum passes for use by Library patrons. Line-up Announced for 2018 Wailin’ Wednesdays Concert Series at the Wayland Town Center. Popular family-friendly concert series returns for its fourth year; kicks off Wednesday, June 27, 5:30 p.m. The businesses of the Wayland Town Center along with National Development are proud to once again present Wailin’ Wednesdays, a family-friendly summer concert series which kicks off on Wednesday, June 27 from 5:30-7:30pm at the Wayland Town Center East Green. The events are all free and open to the public. The concert series will be held on the last Wednesday of the month throughout the summer and feature live music, a variety of activities including balloon and air brush tattoo artists, giveaways, and tasty food samplings including hamburgers, hot dogs and veggie sticks courtesy of the Wayland Town Center businesses.
The 2018 lineup includes:
* Wednesday, June 27 – The Missy Maxfield Project. A five-member cover band based in MetroWest featuring music ranging from the 60s to present.
* Wednesday, July 25 – Off Label. “Doc rock” band of mostly medical professionals who blow off steam by rocking out to classic rock and R&B.
* Wednesday, August 29 – Low Priority. Boston based rock cover band playing all of the rock songs you know and songs that make you want to dance.

Too often adults tell students what issues are important and what to care about. It is time to flip the roles and have our high school age residents in Wayland tell the adults what matters to them. The Wayland Democratic Town Committee invites you to share your thoughts at a Listening Session on June 13th at 6pm in the Raytheon Room of the Wayland Public Library. Come tell us what issues are important to you and what we as a community could (or should) be doing. This Listening Session is open to high school students of all ages and all political affiliations. And, yes, there will be free pizza. We hope to see you on June 13th!
MAPC and MWRC seek residents’ opinions on Town Meeting. Your town, along with other MetroWest communities, wants to know what you think about Town Meeting and how Town Meeting might be improved. This survey is confidential, and everyone is encouraged to take it. You are not required to answer everything or anything, but your help is very much appreciated. This 100% grant-funded project is being run in collaboration with Ashland, Framingham, Holliston, Natick, Southborough, Wayland, Wellesley, and Weston through the Metropolitan Area Planning Council (MAPC) and its local arm, the MetroWest Regional Collaborative (MWRC).

Spring Botanical Programs with Sudbury Valley Trustees
Sudbury Valley Trustees (SVT) is offering a number of programs and guided walks to highlight the botany of the region. On Friday, June 8, Christa Collins will be leading a new program at Wolbach, Nature Observation through Sketching. This program will help participants hone their plant ID skills by focusing closely on a plant’s distinguishing characteristics.

Love music? You know… it is never too late to go back to your instrument or start a new one! One of our members went back to his violin at age 87 after not playing for 70 years! He is 90 now and still playing! And, we have beginners in their 70s and 80s. Make a new year resolution and come play with us. We have a Concert Band (woodwinds, brass & percussion) and a String Ensemble (violin, viola, cello & bass) and range in age from 30-something to 90. Wednesday, June 13, Wayland High School Student Listening Session hosted by the Wayland Democratic Town Committee, 6-7:30pm. Attention Wayland High School: FREE PIZZA! Now that we got your attention, we have a few questions:
1. What does the word “politics” mean to you?
2. How does that word make you feel?
3. What issues facing our community, state, and country are important to you?
4. On what topics should the town, commonwealth, or country be focusing?
Too often adults tell students what issues are important and what to care about. It is time to flip the roles and have our high school age residents in Wayland tell the adults what matters to them.
The Wayland Democratic Town Committee invites you to share your thoughts at a Listening Session on June 13th at 6pm in the Raytheon Room of the Wayland Public Library. Come tell us what issues are important to you and what we as a community could (or should) be doing.
This Listening Session is open to high school students of all ages and all political affiliations. And, yes, there will be free pizza. We hope to see you on June 13th!
Wednesday, June 13, Weston Summer Concert Series: Weston Ice Cream Social featuring Classic Groove, Weston Town Green, 6-8:30pm.Classic Groove plays Jazz, R&B, classic Top 40 hits from the ’70’s and ’80’s. Free ice cream from 6 to 7:30 PM, concert 7-8:30pm.
Thursday, June 14, Wayland Outdoor Summer Concert Series: Southbound Train, Wayland Town Building Courtyard, 7-8pm. Wayland’s 7th annual free Summer Community Concert Series begins Thursday, June 14 at 7pm in the Town Building courtyard and continues on the following four Thursdays. Bring a chair or blanket, and come enjoy some great music with your friends and neighbors. Southbound Train plays country music. In case of rain, the concerts will be indoors.
Saturday, June 16, and Sunday, June 17, RiverFest, Locations all over the region.
Celebrate Father’s Day weekend June 16 and 17 at RiverFest, which will feature a weekend of free activities celebrating our local Wild and Scenic Rivers. In recognition of their remarkable value, Congress designated the Sudbury, Assabet, and Concord Rivers as part of the National Wild and Scenic River System in 1999. The River Stewardship Council was created to promote the preservation of these resources. This year we celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Wild and Scenic Act. Local Events. The weekend events include free walks, music, and family-friendly adventures led by local organizations. In Wayland, there will be a History Paddle and a Photo Walk. Saturday and Sunday, June 16 and 17, Wayland Dads Epic Dads Weekend. Golf Tourney on Friday morning (6/15) with 100+ Dads and Moms golfing on the beautiful Sandy Burr course. Then on Saturday afternoon we kickoff the 2nd annual Dad & Me Camp Out (6/16 & 6/17) on the High School fields with 200+ campers. Complete details and ticket links online here.

Saturday, June 17, Musical Instrument Petting Zoo, Wayland Art Center, 2-4pm. If your child is interested in joining the school band in the fall, here is a chance to experiment with instruments such as the flute, oboe, clarinet, saxophone, trumpet, trombone, French horn and percussion, violin, cello and viola. Introduce your child to the world of music and actually play band and orchestra instruments. Join us for a fun and informative afternoon. Demonstration is at 2:00pm and then try the instruments.
