Moderator announces he is not seeking re-election, saying “I have made the decision that I will not seek reelection for another term as Moderator. This has been a difficult decision but in the end is based on only one factor: tenure of office. There are no subplots or hidden meanings. The Sudbury-Wayland-Lincoln Domestic Violence Roundtable Provides Valentine Gift Bags to Survivors of Domestic Violence. This year despite the continuing circumstances created by Covid, the Sudbury- Wayland-Lincoln Domestic Violence Roundtable held its annual Valentine Collection at Sudbury Wine and Spirits in Sudbury. Although community members could not be invited to help fill the Valentine bags for families affected by abuse, members of the Roundtable gathered to fill the bags and delivered them toclients of REACH Beyond Domestic Violence, The Second Step, and Voices Against Violence. Due to the generosity of our local communities, the Roundtable was able to provide 50 gift bags to all the residents who ranged in age from 5 months to 71 years old.

The Roundtable would like to thank everyone who generously donated Valentine gifts and made this year’s collection a great success.

The Roundtable would like to offer special thanks to Joseph Saia of Sudbury Wine and Spirits for again hosting the collection basket, to the students at Sudbury Extended Day for decorating the gift bags, and to the staff and the families of Sudbury Extended Day for their wonderful donations. Thank you also to Kate Ryan for using her birthday celebration to collect donations in lieu of personal gifts. The Roundtable also appreciates the ongoing support of members of the League of Women Voters of Sudbury.

The pandemic has been especially difficult for families in abusive situations, and these Valentine’s Day bags brighten the lives of families living in domestic violence shelters and transitional housing and let them know that they are supported in their efforts to rebuild their lives free from abuse.

Community Public Forum on Route 20 Corridor, February 28. The Wayland Planning Board is hosting a virtual public forum to receive input from residents and businesses on revitalization of Wayland’s Route 20 Corridor from the area around the Route 20/27/126 intersection west to the Sudbury River. The Town’s consultant BETA Group, Inc. will present examples of approaches and lead a community discussion to elicit public sentiment on possible scenarios for future improvements along the corridor.

Please bring your ideas and preferences for future development so that together we can craft a viable Master Plan for the Route 20 Corridor.

PUBLIC FORUM: Wayland’s Route 20 Corridor – Master Plan Development

WHEN: Tuesday, February 28, 2023 at 7:00 p.m.

The Zoom link will be available online here

BACKGROUND: Multiple Town Boards are collaborating on an effort to create a renewed vision for the existing Route 20 commercial area that promotes an economically and socially vibrant, unified, “New England Village” town center. A major goal is to reduce Route 20’s dividing impact and provide increased connectivity and safety for pedestrians and bicyclists throughout the area. Some ideas for possible improvements are: lighting, plantings, improved locations for entrance driveways, distinct cross walk locations, traffic calming measures, and incorporating the rail trail into the mix (see details online here).

And, we are open to any additional thoughts and suggestions. Your ideas and participation are vital to achieving a viable plan for revitalization of the Route 20 Corridor.

Backup Power: Battery Storage for Homes & Businesses. Onsite battery storage systems are seeing a spike in interest. Some homeowners are motivated by concerns about access to energy during power outages or brownouts, while others are looking to add battery storage to make the most of their solar system. These battery systems often provide backup for 10 to 20 hours and can be charged either by solar panels onsite or electricity from your utility.

Join MetroWest Climate Solutions for a free webinar on Feb. 28 at 7 p.m. to learn more. In this session, Matt Honkonen of East Coast Solar will provide an overview of issues to consider when installing battery storage systems in your home and/or business, including cost. The session will also discuss the often-overlooked human rights abuses associated with cobalt / lithium mines in Africa. Following Matt, two local residents will share their experiences in evaluating vendors and installing battery storage systems in their homes.

LWV hosts Meet Your Legislators, March 6 on Zoom. The League of Women Voters of Wayland invites you to Meet Your Legislators on Monday, March 6 at 5pm on Zoom.

Wayland has two new state legislators as a result of redistricting following the 2020 census: Senator Jamie Eldridge replaces Becca Rausch and state Representative David Linsky will represent precincts 2 and 3 while Representative Carmine Gentile will continue to represent precincts 1 and 4. With the help of their aides, the League of Women Voters of Wayland will host a virtual “Meet Your New Legislators” on Monday, March 6 at 5pm. Click here to register!

This is your opportunity to ask those burning questions of the people who represent you in the statehouse. Why this and not that? What about that issue, be it the environment, voting, criminal justice, taxes, or traffic? Each legislator will have 5 to 10 minutes to introduce himself and talk about his legislative agenda for the next two years. You will then have the opportunity to ask questions. Iryna Priester will moderate the forum and Kaat Vander Straeten is our technical guru.

A recording of the forum will be available on WayCAM, the Wayland League website, and the Energize Wayland website.

LWV on upcoming Town Elections & Candidates’ Night. Have you ever considered running for a town office? Could this be the year to toss your hat into the ring? Check out the Town Clerk’s website to see the 18 positions up for election and how you can run for one of those offices. Running for Elected Office | waylandma. The deadline for returning nomination papers is March 7 at 5pm.

The League of Women Voters of Wayland will hold its 73rd Annual Candidates Night on Thursday evening, April 13 at 7pm via Zoom. All candidates, contested and unopposed, are invited to participate, make an opening statement, and answer questions from the public. Nancy Brumbach from the Sudbury League will moderate the forum. Save the date!

The event is inspired by the White Ribbon Campaign, which is the world’s largest movement of men and boys working to end violence against women and girls, and promote gender equity, healthy relationships and a new vision of masculinity.

It follows the White Ribbon Group’s virtual events in March 2022, “A Call to Families: Discussing Healthy Masculinity with Young People,” and March 2021, “Transforming the Culture of ‘Power Over’: Compassionate Accountability.” “Watching Dad” will be the White Ribbon Group’s first major in-person event.

Registration for “Watching Dad” is encouraged at https://tinyurl.com/yc4refu6. While the event is free of charge, donations are always appreciated to help support the cost of this work. To donate, visit www.domesticviolenceroundtable.org/don-form.

Town of Wayland Encourages Residents to Enroll in New CodeRED Emergency Alert System. The Town of Wayland encourages residents, employees and businesses to sign up for CodeRED, the Town’s new emergency alert system. The CodeRed Emergency Alert System is a free community notification system available in Wayland that sends alerts concerning time-sensitive and emergency information that may impact the area.

Emergency alert notifications may include missing children or missing persons, criminal activity, fires, drinking water contamination, utility outages, various threats to people or the environment and other incidents as deemed necessary by Town public safety officials. Those enrolled also may receive timely non-emergency alerts, including road closures, snow plow schedules and more. The alerts are sent to residents via phone call, text message, email and social media.

All community members are invited to register for the CodeRED notification system to receive important alerts and updates. To sign up for these informative, lifesaving alerts, please click here. Registration is customizable, allowing users to choose which alerts they’d like to receive, as well as preferred ways like text, email, cellphone, landline and more.

Community members are encouraged to download the CodeRED Mobile Alert app available in the App Store or Google Play after they sign up to receive alerts.
