Wayland residents to participate in Boston Marathon® Jimmy Fund Walk presented by Hyundai.   Twenty-four residents from Wayland will participate in the Boston Marathon® Jimmy Fund Walk presented by Hyundai on Sunday, October 2. Haley Cohn, Lauren Grant, Rachel Tolmach, Harris Cohn, Jennifer Altreuter, Lewis Cohn, Lindsey Carapezza, Sara Berenson, Jen Gorke, Amanda Moran, and 14 Wayland residents along with thousands of other walkers, will participate in the iconic annual event that will unite the community to raise funds to support all forms of adult and pediatric care and cancer research at the nation’s premier cancer center, Dana-Farber Cancer Institute. The Jimmy Fund Walk has raised more than $155 million for Dana-Farber Cancer Institute in its 33-year history.

Ellie Levine, age eight, and Chloe Marzilli, age eight, will participate as Walk Heroes for the Boston Marathon Jimmy Fund Walk. Heroes are matched with Jimmy Fund Walk teams to give participants an opportunity to connect with patients. Ellie was diagnosed with B-cell acute lymphoblastic leukemia and is matched with Definitive Cares. “The Jimmy Fund has been so nice to me,” Ellie says. “My hobby is soccer. My interest is technology. When I grow up, I want to be a doctor.”

Chloe was diagnosed with rhabdomyosarcoma. Chloe’s family walks on her Match Team, Chloe’s Sunshine Squad. “The Jimmy Fund is an extension of our family,” Chloe says. “We couldn’t fight this fight without their expertise, care, and support.”

Participants have the flexibility to choose from four distance options: 5K Walk (3.1 miles from Dana-Farber Cancer Institute), 10K Walk (6.2 miles from Newton), Half Marathon Walk (13.1 miles from Wellesley), or Marathon Walk (26.2 miles from Hopkinton). Participants can also choose to join the event virtually by “walking their way” from wherever they are most comfortable—in their neighborhood, on a favorite hiking trail, or on a treadmill at home. Virtual programming and supporting materials are available.

To register for the Jimmy Fund Walk (#JimmyFundWalk) or to support a walker, visit www.JimmyFundWalk.org or call (866) 531-9255. Registrants can enter the promo code NEWS for $5 off the registration fee. All registered walkers will receive a bib, medal, and a Jimmy Fund Walk T-shirt.

Neighbor Brigade Announces 10th Anniversary Pam’s Run 5K/10K.

This year marks the tenth anniversary of Pam’s Run, one of New England’s largest charity 5K Run or Walk, 10K Run and Kids’ Run for ages 2-9. Pam’s Run is the signature event supporting Neighbor Brigade, a nonprofit 501(c)(3) organization that supports local families facing sudden crises. The race will take place on Sunday, October 16 at Claypit Hill School in Wayland. Chief Human Resources Officer of Reliant Medical Group, 1983 Wayland High School graduate and childhood friend of Neighbor Brigade founder Pam Manikas Washek, Joe Ricciardi will emcee the event with registration tables opening at 8:15 a.m. and the first gun going off at 10:00 a.m.

Pam’s Run is dedicated to the memory and legacy of Pam Manikas Washek, a tireless champion for families facing sudden crisis. Pam was inspired to found Neighbor Brigade (formerly Wayland Angels) in 2002 while battling cancer. Her vision was to help others in crisis with free and immediate services provided by fellow community members. It is a simple idea with tremendous impact in providing relief while strengthening the fabric of a community, according to the Neighbor Brigade website. Pam’s sister and Pam’s Run Race Director Joanna Manikas states, “Pam’s dream was to spread the mission of neighbors helping neighbors to as many communities as possible, because ‘who wouldn’t want to live in a community like that?”” Sadly, Pam lost her battle with cancer in 2012. Ten years later, Pam’s mission lives on through the twenty-eight Neighbor Brigade chapters throughout Massachusetts and beyond, the thousands of volunteers and their services to thousands of families in need, and through Pam’s Run.

Since the inaugural event in 2013, Pam’s Run has gained increasing notoriety as one of the foremost 5K/10K races in New England. With marked routes throughout tree-lined backstreets of Wayland, Pam’s Run offers several age divisions with prizes for the top three placers in each division. Every participant in the Kids’ Run will receive a ribbon. All runners and walkers that register before September 29th will receive an early bird discount and commemorative t-shirt.

In addition to the race, there will be live music by local cover band Daddios, food trucks, a kids’ tent filled with activities and an obstacle course. There is truly something for everyone at Pam’s Run.

Pam’s Run Planning Committee Needs Your Help! For those that don’t want to walk or run but still want to help ensure the day is a success, there are two ways to contribute:

  • *
Sponsorship: As with any non-profit charitable organization, this event would be not be possible without the generosity and financial support of sponsors. Several sponsorship levels are available and can be viewed at https://pamsrun.com/sponsorship/.
  • *
Volunteers: Pam’s Run is an enormous undertaking that requires the help of more than 120 volunteers on race day. Whether you sign up as a course marshal, water station attendant, finish line support or wherever is needed, there is a role for everyone and no experience is necessary! High school students who need community service hours are encouraged to sign up. Please visit https://pamsrun.com/volunteer/ to sign up.

To register or to obtain more information about Pam’s Run visit the website at https://pamsrun.com/ or email Race Director Joanna Manikas at pamsrundirector@gmail.com.

Wayland CERT Training comes to Wayland beginning September 27.

This fall and early winter, Wayland’s Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) will be conducting training for those who are interested in becoming members of the CERT team. Training will take place on Tuesday evenings, 7-9pm, beginning September 27 at the Wayland Public Safety Building, at the intersection of routes 27 and 20, and will run for 10 weeks.

In addition to this multi-week, comprehensive training course, CERT also conducts sessions on a variety of relevant topics throughout the year.

CERT is comprised of volunteer residents of Wayland who are willing to assist the town in the event of any emergency that requires additional backup resources. CERT’s main responsibility is to operate and staff the town’s emergency shelter, located at the Wayland Middle School, in the event of a disaster caused by blizzards, hurricanes, or other situations forcing people to leave their homes to seek shelter.

CERT operates under the direction of Wayland’s Emergency Management Director (Police Chief) and the Local Emergency Planning Committee (LEPC).

No special skills are required to join CERT. The standard FEMA training program offered covers such items as disaster preparedness, fire safety, disaster medical operations including CPR and first aid, light search and rescue operations, CERT organization, and terrorism. In practice, the CERT team is divided up into several sub-teams, including shelter, first aid, animal rescue and care, and general support. Once trained, members participate when available and to the extent of their comfort level.

So please consider becoming a member of Wayland CERT and learn how to take care of yourself, family and neighbors in the event of an emergency! For more information, and to register for the upcoming training, please contact Joseph Gordon, Wayland CERT Coordinator, or Doug Leard, LEPC Chairman.

First Parish in Wayland: Encountering Difference. Please join us on September 25 at 10am for a service on the topic, “Encountering Difference.” Our world is rife with varied opinions and differences—including about religion. As a country devoted to religious freedom, the U.S. has become a widely religiously diverse nation, despite efforts by some to define the U.S. as a “Christian Nation.” What is at stake in defining the U.S. as a haven for religious pluralism or as a Christian nation? The Rev. Dr. Stephanie May will lead the service. For in-person attendance, please see our latest Covid protocols at https://www.uuwayland.org/covid-information/. You may also watch our services on Facebook or contact our office for Zoom information. To sign up for our newsletter, visit: https://www.uuwayland.org/NewsSignup.

From the COA

Weston COA: Local and Global Discussion Group to discuss Dana Milbank’s The Deconstructionists at October 13. Amidst all the current political turmoil – the search of Donald Trump’s Mar-a-Lag residence, constant accusations of racial injustice, school shootings, stock market fluctuations, the war in Ukraine, Fauci’s resignation and his Covid legacy – the Local and Global Discussion Group of the Weston Council on Aging will review the recent bestseller The Deconstructionists: The Twenty-Five Year Crack-Up of the Republican Party by Dana Milbank at its October 13 meeting. Milbank is a popular Washington Post columnist and The Deconstructionists has been described as a “scathing history” of a quarter century of Republican attempts to hold on to political power by any means necessary. The book, which is available on Amazon, is more than 400 pages long; for those who don’t wish to read the entire work, a number of summaries are also available on Amazon. The meeting will be hybrid, meaning that discussants can participate in person or via Zoom. It will take place from 1:15 to 3 pm. Anyone who is interested in a civil discussion of the issues with a wide variety of participants is welcome to attend. Just show up at the Council on Aging at the appointed time or contact Susan Wagner (susanwgnr@gmail.com, 508-733-8810) for a Zoom link or if you have questions/comments.

Vokes Players announces its production of August Wilson’s The Piano Lesson. Tony and Pulitzer winner August Wilson, one of the top dramatists of the 20th century, wrote The Piano Lesson as part of his 10-play “Century Cycle” (which also includes Fences and Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom) that tells of the African-American experience through the decades. This Pulitzer-winning play, although modest in its storytelling, displays Wilson’s uncanny ability to capture a snapshot of humanity, in a supernatural-laced story set in 1936 Pittsburgh. Boy Willie, wanting to be his own boss and to own his own land, wants to sell a piano that resides in his sister’s home. This piano has huge family and cultural significance, and his sister Berniece refuses to part with it. Their fight culminates in a stand-off in which the family and the community gather to give witness, as the siblings bear the weight of history and eventually come to honor it. Performances are Thursday-Saturday, 8pm with 2pm matinees on Saturday. More details and ticket information online here
