Mission: For many Americans, the costs and logistical challenges of getting to an abortion provider are primary barriers to access, and it’s only getting harder. We book, coordinate and pay for travel, travel expenses, and child care, serving as a single, trusted point of contact for every step of the journey. Wherever someone needs to get to abortion care in the U.S., we find a way to get them there – through direct support and in collaboration with our network of partners.

Wayland CERT Training coming in September. While the pandemic has made it difficult for Wayland’s Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) to train new members, Wayland CERT will hold new trainings this fall.

Last year, Wayland CERT participated in the town’s annual Fire Department Open House. Hosted by the department and the Wayland Firefighters Association, the event, which was located outdoors at the Stop & Shop Plaza on Route 20, was an opportunity for families to interact with fire trucks, try on gear, meet firefighters, and even try techniques for putting out fires.

Wayland CERT’s table provided an opportunity to inform members of the Wayland community on the organization’s activities. CERT, which operates under the direction of Wayland’s Emergency Management Director (Police Chief) and the Local Emergency Planning Committee (LEPC), is comprised of volunteer residents of Wayland who are willing to assist the town in the event of any emergency that requires additional backup resources. CERT’s main responsibility is to operate and staff the town’s emergency shelter, located at the Wayland Middle School, in the event of a disaster caused by blizzards, hurricanes, or other situations forcing people to leave their homes to seek shelter.

The event also served to connect CERT with prospective members. No special skills are required to join CERT. The standard FEMA training program offered covers such items as disaster preparedness, fire safety, disaster medical operations including CPR and first aid, light search and rescue operations, CERT organization, and terrorism. In practice, the CERT team is divided up into several sub-teams, including shelter, first aid, animal rescue and care, and general support. Once trained, members participate when available and to the extent of their comfort level.

Anyone interesting in becoming a member of Wayland CERT, participating in training this fall, and learning how to take care of themselves, their families and neighbors in the event of an emergency should contact Joseph Gordon, Wayland CERT Coordinator, or Doug Leard, LEPC Chairman.

Town of Wayland to Hold Discussion Forum About Recently Installed Traffic Pattern Signs in Glezen Lane Area, September 12.  The Wayland Select Board wishes to invite residents to a forum to discuss the recent litigation settlement regarding traffic on Glezen Lane.

WHEN: Monday, September 12, 7:15pm.

WHERE: Large Hearing Room at Town Hall, 41 Cochituate Road. Participants may also attend via Zoom. The Zoom link will be posted here on the day of the forum.

WHAT: The Select Board will host a forum about the May 2022 settlement in the case of Bernstein, et al. vs. Planning Board, et al., which resulted in traffic flow changes around Glezen Lane and Sudbury Road/Route 27. At the forum, Town Counsel will discuss the history of the litigation, which dates back to 2008 when David and Kathleen Bernstein and 11 other residents raised concerns about increased traffic on Glezen Lane from the then-proposed development of Wayland Town Center.

Following the presentation, there will be an opportunity for public comment and questions. As part of the settlement, the Town reinstalled turn restriction signs on Concord Road and Glezen Lane. These signs were originally installed in 2008 following a court judgment, but were removed in 2015 to conduct a traffic study approved by a court-granted motion.

Documents related to the settlement and historic traffic study data are available on the Town’s website here.

Weston COA: Local and Global Discussion Group to discuss Dana Milbank’s The Deconstructionists at October 13. Amidst all the current political turmoil – the search of Donald Trump’s Mar-a-Lag residence, constant accusations of racial injustice, school shootings, stock market fluctuations, the war in Ukraine, Fauci’s resignation and his Covid legacy – the Local and Global Discussion Group of the Weston Council on Aging will review the recent bestseller The Deconstructionists: The Twenty-Five Year Crack-Up of the Republican Party by Dana Milbank at its October 13 meeting. Milbank is a popular Washington Post columnist and The Deconstructionists has been described as a “scathing history” of a quarter century of Republican attempts to hold on to political power by any means necessary. The book, which is available on Amazon, is more than 400 pages long; for those who don’t wish to read the entire work, a number of summaries are also available on Amazon. The meeting will be hybrid, meaning that discussants can participate in person or via Zoom. It will take place from 1:15 to 3 pm. Anyone who is interested in a civil discussion of the issues with a wide variety of participants is welcome to attend. Just show up at the Council on Aging at the appointed time or contact Susan Wagner (susanwgnr@gmail.com, 508-733-8810) for a Zoom link or if you have questions/comments.

Vokes Players announces its production of August Wilson’s The Piano Lesson. Tony and Pulitzer winner August Wilson, one of the top dramatists of the 20th century, wrote The Piano Lesson as part of his 10-play “Century Cycle” (which also includes Fences and Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom) that tells of the African-American experience through the decades. This Pulitzer-winning play, although modest in its storytelling, displays Wilson’s uncanny ability to capture a snapshot of humanity, in a supernatural-laced story set in 1936 Pittsburgh. Boy Willie, wanting to be his own boss and to own his own land, wants to sell a piano that resides in his sister’s home. This piano has huge family and cultural significance, and his sister Berniece refuses to part with it. Their fight culminates in a stand-off in which the family and the community gather to give witness, as the siblings bear the weight of history and eventually come to honor it. Performances are Thursday-Saturday, 8pm with 2pm matinees on Saturday. More details and ticket information online here
