* Wayland comes together for the William’s Run. This past winter, the Wayland community mourned the loss of second grader William McInnis. To celebrate William’s life and to raise money to plant a garden in his honor at Loker Elementary School, Williams’ family and friends came together for a 1k and 5k run. * New Asian Restaurant To Open Along Post Road In Wayland. A new Asian restaurant will soon open along the Boston Post Road in a space previously occupied by a steakhouse. Jindu Modern Asian Cuisine has been planning to open at 131 Boston Post Road for more than a year. The restaurant recently put a sign out in front of the building near the corner of Pine Brook Road.
* WPS recognizes Lunar New Year as a holiday. On Wednesday May 25, the Wayland School Committee decided to recognize Lunar New Year as a holiday. Following the lead of Brookline and Hopkinton, Wayland is the third school district to acknowledge Lunar New Year as a holiday.
* Wayland High School’s math team wins the Massachusetts state meet. Six members of the Wayland math team competed in the Greater Boston Mathematics League competition for the medium school division on April 8, 2022. The team’s hard work during the Massachusetts state meet paid off, earning them first place overall.
* WPS Superintendent lifts indoor mask mandate. After two weeks of Wayland Public Schools enforcing an indoor mask mandate, Superintendent Omar Easy sent a letter to WPS families on Sunday, May 22 announcing that the mask mandate will officially be lifted for the week of May 31.
Plant/Yard Sale to benefit Let’s Save the Strays International, June 4. This plant sale will be at host Amy Shroff’s home (22 Coolidge Rd) so you can see many of them planted to help you decide which you want. Amy will have shade and sun perennials, trees and shrubs dug from her own yard as well as annuals and herbs for sale in small pots. She will also have jewelry, fabrics, clothing, art, home goods from the countries she have traveled to for sale! Marie Chieppo, owner of EcoPlant Plans, is giving a wonderful lecture on Sustainable Gardening Practices with Native Plants. Event starts at 10am, lecture is at 11am. Entrance fees include a raffle of many items including a beautiful Japanese maple tree worth $200 and admission to the lecture with Marie Chieppo, Master Gardener and owner of Ecoplant Plans, native garden specialist. All the proceeds will benefit the nonprofit Let’s Save the Strays International which focuses on spay neuter vaccine programs in underserved countries. More details online here
Pooch Parade & Festival, June 11. The Pooch Parade & Festival’s mission is to raise funds for various canine charities local to Massachusetts. We expect to host 300+ people and their furry friends, providing a range of entertainment including must-see demonstrations, fun contests for dogs to enter, a wide range of exhibitors to visit, and finishing off with a “paw-some” parade around Weston Town Green. The mission of WayCAM is to provide a non-profit, electronic forum for the free exchange of information and ideas which reflect the talents, skills, interests, concerns, and diversity of the Wayland Community. Whether you are watching your child play sports after the game or watching a live school committee meeting or church service on your computer, WayCAM delivers transparency and connection here in our town.
WayCAM’s primary source of funding is cable subscriptions, which are declining. Our organization is facing severe funding shortages and has seen a decline of approximately 1000 cable subscribers significantly impacting the operations of the cable studio. During the same time that cable subscriptions are decreasing, there has been an increase demand for online streaming services. Which includes the live channel streaming and On-Demand programming on our website. We are actively taking a new step to achieve the same service despite constant decreases in revenue over the past several years.
For many years, WayCAM has proudly provided online streaming services as On-Demand access to content to our community free of charge. WayCAM is honored to be a consistent pillar in the Community which was highlighted during the height of the Covid Pandemic when everything else seemed to shut down. WayCAM remained a constant, finding many ways to connect us all and share important programming to our community.
Effective this fall, please support WayCAM by welcoming our new roll out of our redesigned memberships. Each membership is modest in cost and designed for the individual viewer’s needs. We appreciate your partnership. More details are online here
Call for Walkers: Register for the 34th Annual Boston Marathon Jimmy Fund Walk by Hyundai. Walkers are welcome back on the Boston Marathon® course on Sunday, October 2, to support patient care and research at Dana-Farber Cancer Institute. Registration is now open for the 2022 Boston Marathon® Jimmy Fund Walk presented by Hyundai. Scheduled for Sunday, October 2, funds raised from the Walk support all forms of adult and pediatric patient care and cancer research at one of the nation’s premier cancer centers, Dana-Farber Cancer Institute.
The Jimmy Fund Walk is the only organized walk permitted on the famed Boston Marathon course and participants have the flexibility to choose from four distance options:
* 5K Walk (3.1 miles from Dana-Farber Cancer Institute)
* 10K Walk (6.2 miles from Newton)
* Half Marathon Walk (13.1 miles from Wellesley)
* Marathon Walk (26.2 miles from Hopkinton).
If walkers wish to participate a bit closer to home, the Jimmy Fund Walk has flexible opportunities. Participants can also join the event virtually by “walking their way” from wherever they are most comfortable—in their neighborhood, on a favorite hiking trail, or on a treadmill at home. Virtual programming and supporting materials will be available.

Wayland Community Fund serving Wayland residents temporarily in need of financial assistance. Please call us if you need help!
The Wayland Community Fund (WCF) provides short-term emergency financial assistance to Wayland residents who have lived in Wayland for at least one year. WCF provides funding for basic needs such as utilities, rent, food, medical bills, and other living expenses. Please call us if you need help with your bills, 508-358-3624 or go to the town website for an application.
Join the MRC! New Medical Reserve Corps Volunteers are always needed! We have a great group of volunteers, however, we would love to recruit new members. If you are interested in helping out your community and would like to volunteer please contact the Health Department at Health@wayland.ma.us.

Reference staff can help you find information on a specific topic, whether it is anti-slavery, Lake Cochituate, the many articles in our files related to Wayland history, or anything else. * Where Is Everybody? In our, the librarians’, ceaseless quest to make the library user experience more congenial to you, the library user, the Biography section and 900s have swapped places. The former is now upstairs in the East Mezzanine, and the latter on the main floor, which—after years of division–finally unites the entire non-fiction collection. This in fact may not mean much to you, but it certainly makes us feel better.

* Summer Reading Kickoff: Henry the Juggler. Henry the Juggler (AKA Henry Lappen) is wanted! He is wanted by audiences everywhere for his zany attempts to defy the laws of gravity. He juggles any number of balls, clubs, rings, members of the audience… He balances strange items on the tip of his nose. Everything is accomplished wordlessly as Henry uses body language (and road signs!) to express himself. Caution: Henry is known to use innocent bystanders in his act. Summer Reading. Our 2022 Summer Reading Program Camp iRead: Read Beyond the Beaten Path begins on June 13, with an outdoor kick off performance on June 16 by Henry the Juggler. Other programming highlights include Circus Minimus, making a Rube Goldberg machine, live caterpillars from the Caterpillar Lab, and the Toe Jam Puppet Band. Kids in grades preK through grade 5 will keep track of their reading online or on paper logs and will earn badges for time reading and for attending programs. Every child who registers can pick up a goody bag at the library. Participants will also earn raffle tickets for prizes! Our Teen Reading Program also starts on June 13. Teens can participate in camp-themed programs at the library and read to earn gift packs and gift card prizes. Wayland Seniors: sign up for a free Day of Service, The Wayland Boys Soccer Program is offering a Day of Service to Wayland Seniors on June 11 from 10am–12pm. The boys will do yard work for Wayland Seniors free of charge. Discovery Museum celebrates its 40th Anniversary,
Special programs and events including free outdoor movie nights, accessible arts performances, a free-admission day, a 21+ party, and more will be held June through October. Most events require advance registration, unless noted otherwise.

Upcoming @the W Gallery:
* The May Art Exhibit. This exhibit will be open for viewing in the gallery from 1-5 pm on Saturdays and 11 am-5 pm on Sundays from May 1st to June 4th.
* MXLR Open Mic. Grab a ten minute/2 song slot by signing in on the chalkboard at the door. The gallery has very comfortable seating, room for safe distancing if desired, great acoustics, and a wonderfully respectful listening audience!
* Trio Now Jazz Concert. On Sunday, June 19 from 2 pm to 3 pm, The W Gallery proudly presents the TRIO NOW. This concert is part of the monthly jazz series at the W and is led by Berklee College of Music Professor and Jazz Chair of the W Gallery, Neil Olmstead. Please stay after the concert for a reception honoring the artists featured in our May Exhibit. The reception will take place from 3 pm to 4 pm with delicious refreshments and is free to all!
* Introduction to Mosaicking. In this 6 hour workshop (over 2 sessions) you’ll have fun playing with glass shapes, colors and textures while you learn the basics of glass mosaic techniques and create a decorative panel or a 10’’ x 10” mirror. Choose from a wide selection of precut glass pieces, jewels, fused pebbles and beads or learn to easily cut pieces with wheeled glass nippers. Create a design, glue your pieces according to your layout. The following week you will grout your project with one of the many colored grouts offered. This class is family friendly and is open to students ages 8 and up, if accompanied by a participating adult.
* The Splinters The Splinters, a bluegrass and old-time string band from Massachusetts, deliver a relentless groove to accompany their tight 3-part harmonies. Anne Rouillard (fiddle) brings the heat to her old-time influenced fiddle playing. J Johnson (mandolin) adds a jazzy flair to his breaks. Chris Reckling (guitar, banjo) picks solid rhythm and punchy leads on top of Garrett Wallace’s grooving bass fiddle. A Splinters set veers from straight ahead bluegrass to traditional fiddle tunes and back, with the occasional detour into a modern song. They released their first album as a quartet, “Grey Owl”, at the Thomas Point Beach Bluegrass Festival.
* Needle Chair Pad Workshop. Beginners, come learn how to make a 12 inch round chair pad with the Oxford Punch Needle. Students will learn how to create a simple design for this project, prepare backing material, choose yarns and colors, learn basic stitches and techniques of the Oxford Punch Needle. Students will learn how to finish the project properly before class completion. Once the basics are learned, students can make many other projects with the skills learned.

Senior Profiles: A Monthly Series of Life Stories, Everyone has a story. Get to know the life stories of some of Wayland’s older residents through the Council on Aging’s monthly Senior Profile series. Our first group of profiles includes someone who’s lived in her Wayland home for 83 years, someone who lived under Communist rule and left to find freedom, and someone who was delivered by her ten-year-old sister. Watch for a new profile each month on the COA website.
Celebrating Seniors: Senior Profiles. Get to know some Wayland seniors through our Celebrating Seniors Profile Series. Everybody has a story. In our Celebrating Seniors Profile Series, we share the life stories of some Wayland seniors: The winding paths that brought them to Wayland and to their current age and stage, as well as their thoughts on aging. The stories are fascinating, surprising, and inspiring. Check back regularly for more, we will add a new profile every month. Brought to you by the Wayland Council on Aging, in recognition of Older Americans Month.

Wayland Honors Our Fallen Heroes with 2022 Memorial Day Parade and Ceremony of Remembrance, May 30. This year, Wayland’s Memorial Day Parade returns, followed by a Ceremony of Remembrance at Wayland’s Lakeview Cemetery. The Wayland Memorial Day Parade and Ceremony of Remembrance – hosted by the Wayland Public Ceremonies Committee – will be held on Monday, May 30. The parade will step off from the Wayland Middle School at 11am and proceed along Main Street (Route 27 South) to Commonwealth Road (Route 30 West) and end at Wayland’s Lakeview Cemetery in Cochituate. This year’s Grand Marshall is retiring DPW employee and US Marine veteran, Jack Barry.
Wayland’s Ceremony of Remembrance will follow at the conclusion of the parade in Lakeview Cemetery (80 Commonwealth Road (Route 30) at approximately 11:30am. The ceremony will honor those who have died in service to our nation. Richard P. Turner, USN RET, Purple Heart recipient and Chair of the Public Ceremonies Committee will serve as Master of Ceremonies. The keynote address will be given by COL Troy N. Morton, Commander, USARIEM, followed by a special dedication in commemoration of American Legion Post 133’s 100th anniversary. This year’s patriotic music program will be performed by the Wayland High School and Middle School bands, and Wayland’s own Victoria Gitten. The Ceremony of Remembrance will conclude with the playing of Echo Taps, a Rifle Salute and Benediction.
In the event of rain, the parade will be canceled and the Memorial Day Ceremony of Remembrance will be held indoors, at 11am in the Wayland Middle School Gymnasium. We welcome all who can attend and thank participants for complying with COVID-19 CDC guidance for health and safety. We also invite those unable to attend in person to view the live recording of the Ceremony of Remembrance on WayCAM.

Bird Walk at Greenways, June 1, Join Brian Harris, Town of Wayland Land Manager, and Laura Mattei, SVT Director of Stewardship, for a pleasant stroll through the fields and woods of the Greenways Conservation Land when birds are most active. Greenways is located on the Sudbury River and is part of a nationally-designated Wild & Scenic River. Wednesday, June 1, 7:00 am – 9:00 am. Free, space is limited. PlayTogether Go 2022: Free Community Event for Metrowest Families, featuring Digital “Musical Treasure Hunt” and Performance, In January Wayland School of Music/PTG commissioned six local professional composers from under-represented groups to write new music for student ensembles. The young musicians will now give the world premiere of this music written especially for them, with the six composers present to hear them. The students also invented game characters, creating digital “playing cards”’ combining their artwork with recorded music snippets. These will feature in a community-wide outdoor “musical treasure hunt” inspired by the Game Pokemon Go, before the performance. Game and performance are free, family-friendly and open to all. First Parish in Wayland Yard Sale, June 4. Please join First Parish in Wayland for a fun and kid-friendly yard sale on June 4, 9:30am-1pm. The church is located at 225 Boston Post Rd., at the intersections of Routes 20, 27, and 126. You’ll find antiques, books, costume jewelry, plants and other useful or fascinating items. You can purchase coffee and treats to enjoy while you shop. While the sale will be mostly outdoors, masks will be required to enter the antiques and books departments, which will be in a well-ventilated space indoors. This will be a CASH-ONLY sale.
Parking: Except for handicap parking spots, parking is NOT available in the church parking lot. Please park in the Trinitarian Congregation Church across the street. A police officer will help shoppers cross the street to the Sale.

Office Hours with Senator Rausch: Senator Rausch has shifted her monthly in-person office hours to remote, virtual office hours held on Fridays. Conversations with the Senator and her staff will take place via phone call or video conference. During these virtual office hours, residents from any part of the Norfolk, Bristol and Middlesex District are welcome to share their questions and opinions on state issues with Senator Rausch and her staff.
