Wayland Community Digs Deep for New Pool

Wayland, MA – (November 5, 2010) – The Wayland Community Pool (WCP) project is almost complete after the demolition of the former pool and building in early June, 2010. The construction of a new pool on the site adjacent to the Wayland High School will be completed bY the end of November.

The new Wayland Community Pool has 10 lanes and 2 1-meter diving boards, making the pool appropriate for local and regional swimming and diving competitions. A removable roof structure will allow outdoor summer use. The new design provides a larger pool deck for more spectators and energy efficient heating and water filtration equipment.   The construction also includes updating and renovating much of the existing facility, including the lobby area, locker rooms and office space.
Area contractors were asked to bid on the construction project and the WCP Board chose Bowdoin Construction of Needham to oversee the project. Architects Drummer, Rosane and Anderson designed the new facility and South Shore Gunite constructed the pool basin. Eric Wood, a Wayland resident and owner of EW Wood Company, reduced his bid for the demolition and excavation by $50,000, as a generous donation to the new pool. Scotland Painting, owned by Scott Brogan, is donating some of the materials and labor to paint the new facility. Kennedy Landscaping and Nursery will donate some of the landscaping around the building and Henley Landscaping will donate new banners and equipment to the pool.

In a difficult economy, the WCP Board has raised over $1.6 million in private funding from local residents and received leading donations from area banks including The Village Bank and TD Bank. The total cost of the project will be approximately $2.5 M. A loan was secured through Middlesex Bank for the additional funds. This loan is 90% guaranteed by the U.S. Department of Agriculture. The WCP Board hopes to raise the additional $900,000 so the new facility can operate debt-free. Pool passes (both year-round and summer) and rental fees will sustain a steady income for the pool to meet operational costs. The Wayland Community Pool has already been committed to other area swim and recreation programs including the Natick Recreation Center and the Greater Boston Jewish Community Center.

According to Ben Downs, WCP Chair, “The Wayland Community Pool is a great example of the collaboration of private and public entities working together to build a valuable resource for the community. The WCP Board is leasing the land from the Town of Wayland to build and operate a pool which will allow access to the entire community. The new pool will be used by high school, town and club swim and diving teams as well as seniors, lap swimmers and, of course, children. Now that we are almost finished with the construction of the new pool, it is imperative that we reach out again to area residents and businesses with an appeal to raise the remainder of the money we need to pay for the project,” continues Downs.

Tax-deductible donations in the form of appreciated securities, bequests, life insurance and cash will be appreciated. To make a donation to the Wayland Community Pool, please send checks payable to: Wayland Community Pool, 195 Concord Road, Wayland, MA 01778 or contact Benjamin Downs at (508) 397-7730. For more information about the WCP, visit the website at www.waylandcommunity pool.org. Wayland Community Pool is a 501(c)3 Not for Profit Corporation.
