HELPING HANDS: MONKEY HELPERS FOR THE DISABLED. Our next Great Presenters program on Tuesday, November 5, at 7:30 p.m. will focus on the organization Helping Hands: Monkey Helpers for the Disabled with Executive Director Megan Talbert and Board member Wayland resident Lynn Trimby. For over 33 years the organization has been raising and training capuchin monkeys as service animals to assist people living with paralysis. Using photos, film clips, and anecdotes, this presentation will detail Helping Hands’ in-depth training and placement techniques, the incredible effects of the human-animal bond and how the program evolved from an experimental project to a national organization. It is the only organization of its kind in the world that brings this type of service animal to new recipients and advises clients regarding the care, behavior, and health of these special monkeys
Wayland & King Philip’s War. As part of the town’s 375th anniversary celebration, author Michael Tougias will give a program on Sunday, November 3, at 3 p.m. about the battles between the New England Colonists and Native Americans in 1675-76, commonly known as King Philip’s War. Book signing and questions to follow. Co-sponsored by the Wayland Historical Society
Annawon Weedon: Native American Storyteller. Annawon Weedon, of Narrangansett/Pequot/Wampanoag lineage, will be at the library on Wednesday, November 13, at 3:30 p.m. to introduce families to the culture of his tribes. He will tell stories from his tribal lineage and teach children how to make corn husk dolls. Mr. Weedon has worked at both the Plimoth Plantation as a Museum Interpreter and at the Boston Children’s Museum as a Native American Specialist. For families with children ages 4 and up.
Julie Berry Author Visit. Local best-selling author Julie Berry will be at the library to talk about her new, wonderful young adult novel, All the Truth That’s in Me, on Tuesday, November 19, from 7-9 p.m. This novel looks at the importance of speech and silence, and has tie-ins with The Scarlet Letter, Speak by Laurie Anderson, and the contemporary story of the Pakistani schoolgirl Mulala Yousafzai. For ages 12 and up.
Middle School Meditation Book Group. Calling teens in grades 6 to 8. Chat…Relax…Eat…Read…Meditate. Sound good? If so, then come to the library on Tuesday, November 12, from 7-8:30 p.m. for a meditation book group led by Dr. Dossie Kahn of Wayland Youth and Family Services. We will be discussing A Handful of Quiet: Happiness in Four Pebbles by Thich Nhat Hanh. Bring a parent sign you in. PARENT-CHILD BOOK GROUP. Children’s Librarian Pam McCuen leads a monthly book discussion group for children in Grades 4 and 5, with a parent. Our next meeting will be on Monday, November 18, at 7 p.m. and the book is Wonderstruck by Brian Selznick. The group will decide together what next month’s book will be. Mother-Daughter Book Club. We’re starting a new book group! This one is for girls Grades 7 and up, with their moms. The first book we’ll be discussing is The Lions of Little Rock by Kristin Levine. The first meeting will be Tuesday, November 5, at 6:30 p.m. in the library’s Youth Services Department. Harvest Program. Douglas Cook, Education Director at Land’s Sake farm in Weston, will talk to children about the New England Harvest, will read stories, and will lead children in a hands-on project. There will be popcorn! Friday, November 15, 2013 from 3:30-4 p.m. For kids ages 4 and up.
Lego Club for children ages 6 and up. Our next meeting will be on Wednesday, November 6, at 3 p.m. in the Raytheon Room. Kids, come make fabulous creations out of Legos!
Children’s Poetry Workshop. Children’s Librarian Pam McCuen will lead our next Poetry Workshop for children 8 and up on Monday, November 25, from 7-8 p.m. We will be listening, reading, and writing poetry. Any kid over 8 years of age who is interested in poetry is welcome to attend.
NEEDLEWORK/HANDWORK GROUP. Our Needlework/Handwork group, facilitated by Ann Moses, meets on the first Wednesday of each month from 10–11:30 a.m. in the Raytheon Room. The next meeting will be on Wednesday, November 6. This is a group for people to work on needlework and handwork projects together. LIBRARY BOOK GROUPS FOR ADULTS. Both of our two library book groups for adults will meet during the first week of November. The next meeting of our evening group, led by Andy Moore, will be on Monday, November 4, at 7 p.m. We will be discussing Two Guys from Verona by James Kaplan. Our next meeting of the Noontime Book Group will be on Friday, November 1, at noon and will be discussing A Reliable Wife by Robert Goolrick. The noon group is facilitated by Sandy Raymond. NOVEMBER EXHIBITS. During November the Sudbury Valley Nature Photographers will exhibit their work in the Raytheon Room. The public is cordially invited to an exhibit reception on Saturday, November 2, from 2-4 p.m. in the Raytheon Room. Also this month, we welcome back Murray and Trudy Drobnis with their display of framed photographs in the library foyer.
