On Tuesday, December 24, the library will close at noon and will reopen on Thursday, December 26, at 9 a.m. We will close at 3 p.m. on Tuesday, December 31, and remain closed through New Year’s Day.
HOLIDAY OPEN HOUSE
On Sunday, December 8, the library will participate in the annual Town Center Holiday Open House. Children ages 4 and up are invited to drop in to make holiday crafts with Children’s Librarian Elise Katz from 2:30-4:30 p.m. that afternoon in the library’s Raytheon Room. Refreshments will be provided by the Friends of the Wayland Library and we will be serenaded by a cappella singers from the high school.
LYDIA MARIA CHILD: DOMESTIC DIVA
In connection with Wayland’s 375th anniversary, on Sunday, January 5, from 2:30-4:30 p.m., authors Keith Stavely and Kathleen Fitzgerald will serve up a delicious feast of information and recipes highlighting the domestic side of Wayland’s foremost abolitionist and author, Lydia Maria Child. Child, in addition to her incredible efforts on behalf of reform, was the best-selling author of early nineteenth century advice books, including the popoular Frugal Housewife. Stavely and Fitzgerald are the authors of America’s Founding Food: The Story of New England Cooking and Northern Hospitality: Cooking by the Book in New England. They will regale us with their own experiences trying to follow Child’s imprecise recipes. Members of the Wayland Historical Society have volunteered to try out some of the recipes and pass out samples. An appetizing way to start the New Year! THE POWER OF PROCESS IN STORYTELLING
Richard Weingartner, Director of Drama at Wayland High School, will offer an interactive workshop exploring the use of life experience as a way to open the door to storytelling. Participants will discover the power of their own journeys as a way to connect to the lives of others. Weingartner has produced and written over 30 original plays, teaches a variety of theater and communication courses, has won various playwriting awards, and has run workshops at the college level. He is also an avid motorcyclist! Tuesday, January 7, at 7:30 p.m. in the Raytheon Room.
ED MASCARI JAZZ DUO FEATURING REBECCA WELLONS
Wayland Middle School Director of Bands, Rebecca Wellons will team up with her neighbor, Jazz Pianist Ed Mascari, to present a selection of jazz tunes from the American Songbook in live performance in the library’s Raytheon Room on Sunday, January 12, from 3-4 p.m. For more information about the duo, check out edmascari.com/.

PARENT/CHILD BOOK GROUP
Our group for children in fourth and fifth grade, with a parent, will meet on Monday, December 16, at 7 p.m. in the Raytheon Room. This month we will discuss The Real Boy by Anne Ursu. Each month we discuss a different book. At each meeting the group decides together what next month’s book will be. Led by Children’s Librarian Pam McCuen.
CHILDREN’S POETRY WORKSHOP
Children’s Librarian Pam McCuen will lead our next Poetry Workshop for children eight and up on Monday, December 9, from 7-8 p.m. We will be listening, reading, and writing poetry. Any kid over 8 years of age who is interested in poetry is welcome to attend.
DECEMBER EXHIBITS
During December, members of Arts/Wayland are exhibiting their work in the Raytheon Room. In honor of Wayland’s 375th anniversary year. the exhibitors have used special places in Wayland to inspire their artwork. The foyer contains a photographic exhibit entitled “Nature in Motion” by Wayland resident Nasser K. Check out the lower level display case to see the wonders that are made accessible through our Museum Pass program, sponsored by the Friends of the Wayland Library.
NEEDLEWORK/HANDWORK GROUP
Our Needlework/Handwork group, facilitated by Ann Moses, meets on the first Wednesday of each month from 10–11:30 a.m. in the Raytheon Room. The next meeting will be on Wednesday, January 8.
