As part of the process developed by the Board of Selectmen and the Personnel Board to identify Wayland’s next Town Administrator, the Board is establishing a Selection Committee to work in conjunction with our consultant, Alan Gould from Municipal Resources, Inc. (MRI). The Selection Committee will work with MRI to identify semi-finalist candidates, interview those candidates, and then recommend a group of finalists for interview to the Board of Selectmen.
The Selection Committee will be a seven member committee comprised of one representative each from the School Committee, the Finance Committee, the Board of Public Works and the Personnel Board. In addition, we are seeking three residents at large who would be willing to actively participate on the committee and provide a perspective from our residents on the candidate they believe would have the requisite skill sets to serve the community as its next Town Administrator. It is anticipated that the Board of Selectmen will make the appointments to this important committee at their meeting of January 27, 2014.
As a member of the Selection Committee, participants will be asked to assess certain personal characteristics, attributes, and aspects of a candidate’s style that relate to how well a candidate may interact with and be viewed by citizens of the community. The underlying concept is that Wayland has a unique “personality” shaped by the values, attitudes, and expectations of the citizens who reside in Wayland. This is especially important because of the active “participatory” role citizens play in the governance of Wayland.
To provide our citizen designees with a better sense of the commitment required, please note the following points:
- The Selectmen will seek the opinions of residents regarding the next Town Administrator. Among the venues for comment will be time set aside at upcoming Selectmen meetings for public input. Designees should plan to attend a session(s) so that they hear the public’s comments first hand.
- Approximately 12 applicant packets will be forwarded to Selection Committee members in advance. They will need to thoroughly review the information in advance.
- A pre-interview meeting, probably one evening, will be with MRI for the purpose of selecting the semi-finalists.
- One full day, most likely a work day, will be devoted to interviewing the semi-finalists. It is possible this all-day session may be on a weekend to assure active participation by all Committee members
Due to the time constraints the Board is operating under to complete this important task, the Selectmen ask that any interested resident who would like to participate in this process and lend a particular expertise they have acquired as business people, lay people or simply as concerned residents of the Town submit a letter of interest to the Board prior to the close of business on Thursday, January 23, 2014. You may submit your letter of interest to the Selectmen’s Office in Town Building or email it to the Board at selectmen@wayland.ma.us
Thank you for your interest in serving the Town of Wayland.
