News and Events from the Wayland Library

WAYLAND READS PLANNING. We’ve started to think about next year’s community reading program. If you are interested in being on a committee to help choose the book and plan related programs, please email us at wayland@waylandlibrary.org or call 508-358-2311 and ask for Assistant Library Director Sandy Raymond. Participation would entail some evening meetings this spring and then some more planning meetings in the fall. We welcome community participation in planning this event!

FRANK SMITH RETURNS. Classics scholar Frank Smith will return later this month with a program entitled “Dante, Milton, and the Devil.” This course will examine the great adversary of Western literature, the Devil, as he appears in Dante’s “Inferno” and the first four books (chapters) of Milton’s “Paradise Lost.” Smith will discuss the characterization of the Devil in each epic as well as the art inspired by them. Participants are encouraged to read Dante’s “Inferno,” translated by John Ciardi. Any edition of “Paradise Lost” would be fine, but Mr. Smith particularly recommends the Barnes and Noble Classics edition with introduction and notes by David Hawkes. Smith was a Fulbright scholar and is the former head of the Language Department at Wayland High School. The program dates are March 25 and April 1, 8, 15, and 22 from 1-3 p.m. in the Raytheon Room.
