On May 12, 2014 at 6:00 p.m., at the Wayland Town Building, the Department of Conservation and Recreation (DCR) will provide Wayland with an update on the status of the Mass Central Rail Trail (MCRT) – Wayside. Representatives from the DCR will also answer questions and listen to concerns from residents about the project, in addition to outlining steps for permitting and initial project development. The meeting is expected to last for one hour.
DCR leased a 19 foot wide, 23 mile rail right-of-way from the MBTA in 2010 to develop the bikeway/walkway from Waltham to Berlin. They are working and partnering with the towns along the right of way to build the bikeway/walkway. Wayland has three miles across our town, from the Weston line through town center, across the Sudbury River to the Sudbury town line.
Along the 23 mile corridor, DCR has completed the following work to support and provide towns with basic information they need to move forward with the development of the bikeway/walkway:
- Identified~Infrastructure
- Identified and mapped encroachments
- Identified potential wetland and habitat areas
- Identified historic and cultural sites / issues
- Base and areal mapping of entire corridor
Further information can be found at the DCR website here. If you have any questions, please contact Larry Kiernan, Wayland Representative for the MCRT, at 508 380 2094 or via email.
