Riverfest, June 20 – 22, 2014

Riverfest is a weekend of celebration on and along the Sudbury, Assabet, and Concord Rivers, sponsored by the SUASCO River Stewardship Council. This annual event takes place in communities along the 29 miles of the three rivers that have been federally designated as Wild and Scenic, from Framingham to Lowell. They range from events on the water to hikes and bike rides along the river and include art, music, history, nature, wildlife, and even rain-friendly activities. Wayland is sponsoring two events this year. The annual history paddle will be led by Brian Donahue, professor of history at Brandeis University. He will stop periodically to talk about the history of the river while paddling from the Route 20 boat launch to Sherman’s Bridge. Bring your canoe or kayak and a life jacket to Route 20 at 9am on Saturday, June 21. Call 508-358-2980 for more information.

The second Wayland-sponsored event is a photo walk with members of the Sudbury Valley Nature Photographers (SVNP) around the Cow Common on Old Sudbury Road. Join SVNP member Hendrik Broekman in a stroll around the 65-acre conservation area, looking for interesting photos in a mixture of forest and field with some views across the Sudbury River marshes. All ages and abilities are welcome. Meet at the Cow Common parking lot across from the North Cemetery. Rain date is Sunday. Call 508-358-2980 with questions.

In addition to single events such as the two Wayland-sponsored activities, there are three location where a number of activities will take place: Great Meadows National Wildlife will host fishing and family festivities including snakes on Saturday from 10 to 2; the Grist Mill on Hop Brook will have a rubber ducky race and fly fishing demonstration and lessons on Sunday from 1 to 3; and the Old Manse will be the location for another paddle as well as music and art between 11 and 4, also on Sunday.
