Caution, Drivers: Baby Turtles Crossing!

babyturtles
Remember the snapping turtles that wandered around town last June, digging holes and laying eggs? Those eggs are now hatching and baby turtles are crawling out of the ground, making their way to the nearest pond, swamp or river’s edge. Watch for them when you walk in conservation areas (or maybe even your own yard), and when you drive near water spots around town, especially near the Town Building and on Pelham Island Road.
The babies are about the size of a silver dollar, and brownish-grey in color. They are often found in groups — brothers and sisters returning to their ancestral home together. Let’s protect their journeys!
