Congratulations to Wayland Boys Soccer, Division 3 state champions. They defeated Belchertown in Worcester today with a goal by Scott Carvalho 30 seconds into overtime.
Masslive.com 11/22/14: Scott Carvalho scores in overtime as Wayland boys soccer defeats Belchertown 1-0 in D-III final. As Wayland warmed up on Saturday for its matchup with Belchertown in the Division III boys soccer state finals, the Warriors ran into a significant problem: Starting senior goalkeeper Robert Yuan injured his hip diving for ball and couldn’t play. Wayland coach David Gavron went to his backup keeper, Max Marks.
“I said ‘Max, it’s your game,’” Gavron said. “He looked at me and said, “Coach, I’ve been waiting for you to say that all postseason.’”
Marks was ready. He tallied 10 saves against waves of pressure from Belchertown’s offense, keeping the Warriors alive through two scoreless halves. Then, 28 seconds into the first overtime period, Scott Carvalho and Wayland’s offense created chaos inside the 18 before Carvalho poked home the state championship-winning goal, giving Wayland a 1-0 win.
Boston Globe 11/23/14: Wayland blanks Belchertown to win Div. 3 title. Wayland goalie Max Marks never expected to make an appearance in the Division 3 state soccer final against Belchertown Saturday morning, but when starter Robert Yuan sustained an injury during warm-ups, the senior backup stepped in without hesitation.
“[Marks] looked at me and I said, ‘It’s all yours,’  said coach David Gavron. “He said, ‘I’ve been waiting for you to say this all postseason, coach.’
With numerous key saves to close out the second half, Marks guided the Warriors into overtime, and the Wayland offense took just 28 seconds to deliver when senior striker Scott Carvalho knocked in the winner off his own rebound to give the Warriors (16-5-2) a 1-0 victory at WPI.
Boston Herald 11/23/14: Carvalho’s decision pays dividends. After playing freshman soccer, Wayland’s Scott Carvalho stepped away from the pitch and focused on the ice rink. Last spring, several classmates approached the Warriors hockey forward to ask if he would consider picking soccer back up his senior year. He agreed, but didn’t have high expectations for playing time.
“I didn’t even think I was going to play this season, said Carvalho. “The captains told me, ‘This is the last chance to do it. You might as well come on board.’
In the most storybook of endings, it was Carvalho who ended up with the ball on his foot 20 seconds into overtime of the Warriors’ Division 3 boys soccer state championship game against Belchertown. He picked up his own rebound and sent the ball flying into the back of the net to give Wayland a 1-0 win over the defending state champion Orioles.
