Wayland Athletics get new wheels

Generous Donors and Wayland Boosters Help to Purchase the 14-Passenger Bus

The Wayland Boosters handed over the keys to a 14-passenger bus to the Wayland Athletics Department on Monday culminating a yearlong fundraising initiative.

Thanks to the generous support of the community, the Wayland Boosters’ Phase One “Get On The Bus” campaign was a major success with several major donors coming forward.

Eric and Janet Schwartz, regular supporters of Wayland athletics, provided a significant donation to the appeal. The Wayland High School Parent Organization (WHSPO) also made a major donation in addition to many other community members to allow the Boosters to purchase the bus.

The bus will be used for away games and tournaments for Wayland’s smaller athletic teams and will cut the transportation costs of using standard sized school buses for these teams.

While the bus will be used primarily for the athletics department, it will be available during school hours for other uses by the Wayland Public Schools as needed.

“The athletics department and coaches are excited about the flexibility the bus will provide including control of transportation scheduling, increased opportunities for off-campus competition and the ultimate cost savings,” commented Wayland High’s AD Heath Rollins.

“I am so excited to see this bus in the WHS parking lot, said Wayland Boosters president Maureen Tillett. “To be able to experience what started as an idea in a meeting result in such huge support from the community to make it a reality is really a testament to how we can all make things happen.”

The Boosters Phase 2 “Get on the Bus” campaign and appeal is currently underway and, with the support of Village Bank and the community, are purchasing a second bus to be delivered by the winter sports season. Boosters are still seeking donations to support the second bus.
