Habitat Restoration at Memorial Forest, October 15

memorial-forestLearn more about forest management and habitat restoration currently underway at Memorial Forest and the Desert Natural Area in Sudbury. Sudbury Valley Trustees’ Director of Stewardship Laura Mattei will lead a site walk on Saturday, October 15, from 9:00 am to 11:00 am. This walk will review specific tree thinning activities that will occur later this fall.

At the Memorial Forest, Sudbury Valley Trustees is restoring pitch pine-scrub oak barrens. This dwindling habitat supports many species of wildlife that have been experiencing population declines, including the whip-poor-will, prairie warbler, brown thrasher, wild lupine and several butterflies and other insects. The restoration requires cutting trees and thinning areas in preparation for a prescribed burn. Cutting will take place later this year. The walk is an opportunity to learn how the project will be implemented.
