News from the past week
* Wayland homeowners on private roads can challenge plow decision. A month after selectmen decided to remove 11 private roads and two private driveways from the town’s plow list, affected residents are being given a chance to appeal. Selectmen set a deadline of July 15 to submit appeals. Decisions will be made by Sept. 15 in order to give residents time to hire a plow company if their appeal is denied.
* Wayland School Committee to see options for school start times. After years of discussion, the School Committee will finally have a choice of possible solutions for a later start time at the middle and high schools. The discussion dates back to at least 2004, when a town task force concluded students aren’t getting enough sleep, but that getting to the point of a later start time is “complicated.”
* ‘Moms With Amazing Kids’ For Special Needs Kids In Wayland. When Marissa Picariello was born, in 2014, she was healthy and beautiful, with big brown eyes and a full head of hair. It wasn’t until she was about six months old that her parents became concerned. Her development seemed delayed, and she had recurring involuntary movements. [Moms of Amazing Kids is online at https://www.momsofamazingkids.org/.

Over Memorial Day weekend, former Wayland boys volleyball coach Rod Fletcher and his son, Jack, traveled to Dallas, Texas, to compete in the USA Volleyball Open National Championships A Tournament. Wayland, Let’s Do Lunch! Every weekday in Wayland a dedicated team of volunteers criss-crosses the town delivering hot meals to residents who find it hard to grocery shop or cook for themselves. The benefits go far beyond nutrition for both recipients and volunteers. Many relationships span years. Take a look (https://youtu.be/avk694Etx1Q). Get to know some Wayland residents you might not meet otherwise, and meet some important needs in your community. It takes about an hour. To volunteer to deliver Meals on Wheels – regularly, seasonally, or as an on-call substitute – contact Volunteer Coordinator Ann Gordon at the Wayland Council on Aging, 508-358-2990. The Wayland Community Fund serves Wayland residents who need financial assistance. The WCF is a volunteer organization that provides assistance to Wayland residents in financial need, paying utility bills, rent, medical expenses and many other items. It pays bills, it does not provide cash. The organization was originally funded by a bequest from the late Suzanne Leavitt. Contributions from Wayland residents now provide sufficient funding. The WCF is staffed by five volunteers who cover all expenses. As a result, 100% of every contribution goes toward helping people in Wayland. Since its founding 20 years ago the WCF has provided more than $550,000 to Wayland residents in financial need. The Wayland Community Fund can be reached at 508-358-3624.More information on the fund, including who it serves, and how to donate, is available on the Wayland town website online here.
