* MetroWest domestic violence nonprofit celebrates 20 years. After 20 years of fighting against domestic violence, there’s one image Karen Cohen can’t shake from her memory. During a vigil in honor of all who were slain one year, someone covered a pew with a white sheet, placing on it a red rose and a victim’s name.
* Wayland Fire Joins Merrimack Valley Gas Explosion Response. Wayland firefighters have headed to the Merrimack Valley, joining several other Massachusetts first responders to respond to the gas explosions and fires in Lawrence, North Andover and Andover that broke out Friday afternoon.

40B project opposed by neighbors. Despite opposition from neighbors who say a proposed housing development is too big and harmful to the environment, its developer is optimistic the project will be built. The proposed Windsor Place, at 24 School St., would include 12 townhouses, all rentals, in two buildings. Three of the proposed units would be classified as affordable.
* Wayland Students Named National Merit Scholarship Semi-Finalists. Officials of National Merit Scholarship Corporation (NMSC) recently named approximately 16,000 semifinalists in the 64th annual National Merit Scholarship Program. Wayland students Clarissa Briasco-Stewart, Julia de los Reyes, Daniel Nee, Julia Treese and Nathan Zhao were named to the semi-finalist list.

Hilarity For Charity. The Friends of the Wayland Council On Aging will be hosting their annual fundraiser on Sunday, October 28 at the Weston Country Club. By popular demand Jimmy Tingle, nationally known social and political humorist, will return for another “hilarious” comedy performance. Our local Daddios will be providing great music. Library Seeks Parent/Teacher Volunteers for Girls Who Code. If you would like to volunteer to help facilitate this club, please contact Pam McCuen. The main requirement for facilitators is willingness to work with the girls, learn along with them. Some experience with programming is helpful, but not necessary.
This fall and early winter, Wayland’s Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) will be conducting training for those who are interested in becoming members of the CERT team. Training will take place on Monday evenings, 7-9pm beginning September 24 at the Wayland Public Safety Building, at the intersection of routes 27 and 20, and will run for 10 weeks. Become a Tutor of English. Have you ever thought about tutoring someone in English? Most people who decide to become tutors are thinking of the good it can do, helping others become more proficient in English and better able to cope with employment, landlords, schools or the medical profession. But then they discover the rewards, the satisfaction that comes as progress is made and a relationship develops that enriches both learner and tutor. Tutors often speak of their pleasure in learning about another culture and their greater appreciation for the challenges facing those who are adapting to ours.
Because of the constant demand for tutoring, all available tutors are now working with students, and the next tutor-training course has been scheduled. ESOL (English for Speakers of Other Languages) program director Ginny Steel is currently enrolling prospective tutors for the five-session course that starts on October 15. The class will meet at the Wayland Library on five Monday evenings 6-9pm. Class dates this fall are October 15, 22 and 29 and November 5 and 19 (not meeting on Veterans Day). No prior knowledge of a foreign language is needed, just an openness to other cultures and the desire to share your knowledge of English. The training is free, although it is necessary to purchase a textbook for about $20.

Annual 5K Run/Walk, September 23, Benefits Wayland’s Dudley Pond Association. The 22nd annual Dudley Pond Run will be held Sunday, September 23. Proceeds benefit the Dudley Pond Association’s efforts to preserve the quality of Dudley Pond and fight invasive pondweeds. There are events for all ages and abilities: a 5-kilometer race sanctioned by USA Track & Field, a 2-mile competitive walk, a kids’ race, and a non-competitive fitness walk. Medical Reserve Corps Volunteers Needed. Join the MRC! New Medical Reserve Corps Volunteers are always needed! We have a great group of volunteers, however, we would love to recruit new members. If you are interested in helping out your community and would like to volunteer please contact the Health Department at Health@wayland.ma.us.
The Wayland Community Fund serves Wayland residents who need financial assistance. The WCF is a volunteer organization that provides assistance to Wayland residents in financial need, paying utility bills, rent, medical expenses and many other items. It pays bills, it does not provide cash. The organization was originally funded by a bequest from the late Suzanne Leavitt. Contributions from Wayland residents now provide sufficient funding. The WCF is staffed by five volunteers who cover all expenses. As a result, 100% of every contribution goes toward helping people in Wayland. Since its founding 20 years ago the WCF has provided more than $550,000 to Wayland residents in financial need. Special Town Election, October 2. Wayland will be holding a Special Town Election October 2 with question on Sale of Recreational Marijuana on October 2. This is a ballot question which asks whether Wayland should ban the sale of recreational marijuana in Wayland (sample ballot online here). Absentee ballots are now available at the Town Clerk’s office. Applications for Absentee Ballots are available until noon on October 1st and can be found on the Town Clerks website (or online here). Ballots must be received in the Town Clerks office by 8pm election day. If you have any questions, please contact the Wayland Town Clerks Office. Please return the 2018 annual town census in order to update your voter status. If you have not received the census, please notify the Town Clerk’s Office at 508-358-3630.
Wayland Buzz Spotlight on October 2 Election to Permanently Ban Recreational Marijuana sales in Wayland. Host Susan Wagner focuses on the special election on October 2nd to permanently ban the sale of recreational marijuana altogether in Wayland. The current moratorium on marijuana sales expires at the end of 2018. Town officials are in favor of a permanent ban, and that’s the subject of the October 2nd election. We’ll look at the data and the pro and con positions with three panelists: Steven Hoffman, Chair of the Mass. Cannabis Control Commission; Dr. John Schuler, Chair of Wayland’s Board of Health; and Jim Borghesani, Principal of a Boston firm consulting to the marijuana industry. Wayland Garden Club Meeting, Tuesday September 25 at 9:30am. Golden Tones chorus celebrates 30 years of feeling good through singing!
If you enjoy singing and dancing to pop classics and show tunes, come to a rehearsal at the Wayland Senior Center. There are no auditions and no attendance requirements, only a friendly group of music-lovers from all over MetroWest. Children will work together to solve puzzles like the “Human Knot” and play games like “Don’t Wake the Dragon.” Everyone wins when we work together. For children in grades K to 2. * Let’s Build: Lego Car Run. Let’s Build is a hands-on building workshop for kids in grades 4-6. Each month will feature a different building challenge. This month’s Let’s Build Challenge is to build the fastest Lego Car Run. Let’s Build workshops are run by Wayland High School Seniors Eileen Chau and Julia Treese. For kids in grades 4-6. * Girl Who Code Club. The Wayland Public Library will be hosting a Girls Who Code club for girls in grades 6-12 again this year. The club will meet Tuesdays, 4-6pm, October 16 through May 28, excluding school holidays. The teens will learn programming skills with Python, building simple sensor projects, and other technologies using Raspberry Pi single-board computers. The mission of Girls Who Code is to help bridge the gender gap in the technology fields. Wayland’s club will be led by Wayland parent and teacher volunteers, and the club will meet in the Raytheon Room of the library. The library is also considering offering a Girls Who Code club for girls in grades 3-5, which would meet on Monday afternoons, from 4:30-6pm, October 15 to May 27, excluding school holidays. In addition, we will be offering a general information session about GWC for parents and girls on Tuesday, September 25, at 7 p.m. in the Raytheon Room of the Library.
Join Girl Scouts. Girl Scouting builds girls of courage, confidence, and character, who make the world a better place. Girl Scouts is the place where a G.I.R.L. (Go-getter, Innovator, Risk-taker, Leader) can transform her ideas into action, turn her questions into adventure, and grow her confidence through practice. She can discover all she can be and do when she has the right tools and a safe space to shine. We are forming troops at all three elementary schools. If your daughter is interested in Scouting, we will be holding Daisy Samplers on Monday, September 24th, 4:30-5:30pm at Claypit Hill School and Monday, October 1, 6:30-7:30pm at Loker School. Both samplers are open to girls in Kindergarten and 1st grade from all three schools. 2018 Senior Flu Clinic Schedule. The Wayland Health Department will again be offering Appointment-based Flu Vaccination Clinics. High-Dose Flu Vaccine is geared to those aged 65 and older. This and Seasonal Quadrivalent Flu Vaccine will be available during our clinics. We will also have the PREVNAR 13 Pneumococcal Vaccine and the PNEUMOVAX 23 Vaccine (Pneumonia) for those aged 65 and older. Clinics dates are Tuesday 9/18 12-4pm and Thursday 9/20 – 10-3:30pm , and Thursday 9/27 – 10-3:30pm. 2018 Community Clinic Schedule.
The Wayland Health Department along with our Wayland Resident Medical Reserve Corps (MRC) Volunteers will be providing FREE Injectable Flu Vaccine Clinics for ALL interested individuals aged 6mos and up. Flu clinics will be held at the Town Building Large Hearing Room on Wednesdays, October 10, 17 and 24, 2-7pm.
Wayland Youth Basketball Registration opens September 10. Registration for Wayland Youth Basketball programs will open September 10 for all programs: K-2 instructional league, TriTown, and Metrowest leagues for girls and boys in grades 3-8. Registration will take place through their website at waylandbasketball.org. Please send any questions to the contacts on that site.
Attention all 6th, 7th & 8th grade hockey players-register now for the Wayland boys or Wayland/Weston girls teams
The boys team is a game-only league and plays all home games at NESC with some non-league games at local rinks. The season begins at the end of October through late February/early March and is a great way to play with other hockey players in Wayland. All players must have a current USA Hockey member ID # to register and play for the team. Please contact Sharon Desmond if your son is interested in playing or for more information. Tryout dates will be announced in mid-October.
The Wayland/Weston girls middle school team begins after Thanksgiving through the end of February. The team is a co-op team with middle school girls from Wayland and Weston. All home games are played at Rivers and away games are mostly in surrounding towns. All players must have a current USA Hockey member ID # to register and play for the team. Intro to Block Printing Workshop. Learn to block print in this fun workshop with artist and surface pattern designer, Sarah Bertochi. This three-hour class will equip students with all the skills needed to create and enjoy making their own hand-printed kitchen towels. Musicians of the Old Post Road opens its 30th Anniversary Season with Free Concert.The acclaimed period instrument ensemble Musicians of the Old Post Road opens its 30th Anniversary Season with a celebratory free concert on September 23 at 3pm at Gore Place in Waltham. Titled Pleasure Gardens of London, this outdoor (tented) event will be in the festive spirit of the famous outdoor concerts held at Vauxhall on the outskirts of London in the 18th century. Acclaimed soprano Teresa Wakim is the vocal soloist, and WCRB radio host Laura Carlo will emcee the event. This special concert is offered free of admission charge as the ensemble’s way of thanking the community for supporting the group’s music-making through the last three decades. Musicians of the Old Post Road announces Its 2018-2019 30th Anniversary Season: Enlightenment
Musicians of the Old Post Road celebrates its 30th Anniversary Season with five programs that explore the impact of the Enlightenment on 18th-century music and culture. From the rise of the public concert to the industrious creativity of Classical freelance musicians, these programs offer glimpses of the multi-faceted influences of societal changes, philosophy, and scientific discovery on music-making in the Baroque and Classical eras. Wayland Summer Farmers’ Market, Wednesdays through October 10.
The Wayland Summer Farmer’s Market begins on Wednesday, June 27th from 12-5 PM and runs weekly through Oct. 10th. Located in the front parking lot of Russell’s Garden Center on Route 20, the market is a wonderful opportunity to meet and support local farmers and food producers. Twenty vendors will join us for Opening Day. Summer is a great time to introduce children to healthy eating and to prepare meals together as a family. Enjoy fresh, local vegetables, fruit, cheese, eggs, beef, chicken, pork, lamb, seafood, honey, ice cream, baked goods, jam, lemonade, hot sauce, maple products, mushrooms, flower bouquets, farm wine and cider, yarn and pet treats. Dudley Pond Association to hold 50th Anniversary Celebration. Love music? You know… it is never too late to go back to your instrument or start a new one! One of our members went back to his violin at age 87 after not playing for 70 years! He is 90 now and still playing! And, we have beginners in their 70s and 80s. Make a new year resolution and come play with us. We have a Concert Band (woodwinds, brass & percussion) and a String Ensemble (violin, viola, cello & bass) and range in age from 30-something to 90.
