Wayland’s Parmenter Foundation receives $20K gift. On Feb. 5, The Parmenter Foundation headquartered in Wayland announced it received a $20,000 gift from Middlesex Savings Bank. The support will allow The Parmenter Food Pantry, owned and operated by The Parmenter Foundation, to add more fresh fruit, vegetable and meat options to enhance the food pantry experience and to provide healthier choices for recipients year-round.

Appeal possible in affordable-housing bid. Developer Chris D’Antonio is throwing down the gauntlet. D’Antonio told the Daily News that if he doesn’t get a waiver from the Zoning Board of Appeals to build an affordable housing project, to be called Windsor Place, he will go to the state’s Housing Appeals Committee.

Wayland cell tower decision looms. The Zoning Board of Appeals is not ready give Verizon Communications Inc. a variance to build a 140-foot cell tower at the Wayland Rod and Gun Club. Instead, the ZBA asked Verizon on Tuesday night to look into the possibility of upgrading equipment on existing towers to close a coverage gap. Verizon has said the gap can only be fixed by installing a tower at the club, but has agreed to look into potential equipment upgrades and report its findings at the ZBA’s Feb. 26 meeting.

ESOL Tutor Training.Have you ever thought about tutoring someone in English? Most people who decide to become tutors are thinking of the good it can do, helping others become more proficient in English and better able to cope with employment, landlords, schools or the medical profession. But then they discover the rewards, the satisfaction that comes as progress is made and a relationship develops that enriches both learner and tutor. Tutors often speak of their pleasure in learning about another culture and their greater appreciation for the challenges facing those who are adapting to ours. The Wayland Library sponsors an ESOL (English for Speakers of Other Languages) program that serves a wide area around Wayland. Because of the constant demand for tutoring, all available tutors are now working with students, and the next tutor-training course has been scheduled. Program director Ginny Steel is currently enrolling prospective tutors for the five-session course that starts on February 26. The class will meet at the Wayland Library on five consecutive Monday mornings, 9:30-12:30. No prior knowledge of a foreign language is needed, just an openness to other cultures and the desire to share your knowledge of English. The training is free, although it is necessary to purchase a textbook (later) for about $20. Sudbury-Wayland-Lincoln Domestic Violence Roundtable Valentine’s Day Gift Collection. Each February, the Sudbury-Wayland-Lincoln Domestic Violence Roundtable collects items for Valentine’s Day and fills gift bags for women, men and children temporarily living in local domestic violence shelters and transitional housing programs: REACH Beyond Domestic Violence, The Second Step, and Voices Against Violence. The Valentine Bags are decorated by the children from Sudbury Extended Day.
Members of our local communities are cordially invited to participate in this collection and to help fill the bags at the Roundtable meeting on Tuesday, February 12 at 3pm at the Wayland Public Safety Building. This is a great opportunity for schools, scout groups, civic organizations, workplaces, families, friends, and neighbors to join the Roundtable in making lives brighter for families affected by domestic violence. Small gestures like the gift bags let families know they are supported in their decision to leave an abusive situation and brighten their day. Some examples of needed items are gift cards for CVS, Target, grocery stores etc. For mothers in the shelters some items would include full size bath products, socks, cosmetics, nail polish, hair products, phone cards, journals, postage stamps etc. Items for teens and children should be age appropriate from crayons, coloring books, small stuffed animals, matchbox cars, stickers socks, and non-violent toys, to bath and hair products, books, diaries, movie passes, ITunes cards, and candy. In past years the Roundtable has provided as many as 125 bags for families in shelter and transitional housing. WPSF Annual Spelling Bee FORM YOUR SWARM! Wayland High School, Sunday, March 24, 12-4:30pm. Students in grades 2 through 5 form teams of three. While all team members must be in the same grade, teams can be comprised of members from any Wayland school. Parents, please help your children find their three person team. Wayland High School Late Night 2019: Help support a safe, fun night for our students! Saturday, May 18 will be an exciting day for Wayland High School students – it is the evening of the Junior Prom. For the 21st year, Wayland High School parents and the local business community will come together to fund and support “Late Night,” a fun, supervised event for our Prom-goers and their guests immediately following the Prom. Late Night is a free, after-Prom celebration organized and chaperoned by our High School parents, designed to provide a safe and substance-free environment where classmates can be together and celebrate on Prom Night. Late Night is 100% funded by our Wayland parents and the local business community. We keep this event FREE for the kids to make their attendance as easy as possible. All Juniors and their guests are encouraged to participate in this event, whether they attend the prom or not, so we need your financial support. Donations are needed to plan and secure the entertainment, food and activities that will ensure a fun and successful event. The cost to cover all of the event expenses is estimated to be $85 per person. Please help us make Late Night 2019 a memorable event by making as generous a donation as possible. The Wayland Community Fund serves Wayland residents who need financial assistance. The WCF is a volunteer organization that provides assistance to Wayland residents in financial need, paying utility bills, rent, medical expenses and many other items. It pays bills, it does not provide cash. The organization was originally funded by a bequest from the late Suzanne Leavitt. Contributions from Wayland residents now provide sufficient funding. The WCF is staffed by five volunteers who cover all expenses. As a result, 100% of every contribution goes toward helping people in Wayland. Since its founding 20 years ago the WCF has provided more than $550,000 to Wayland residents in financial need. The Wayland Winter Farmers’ Market takes place on Saturdays, 10am-2pm at Russell’s Garden Center though March 16. Protecting Our Immigrant Neighbors – A Conversation with Legislators. On February 26 at 7 p.m., First Parish in Wayland (225 Boston Post Rd.) will host a discussion on immigration with four local legislators: Sen. Jamie Eldridge (who represents Sudbury, Acton, and other neighboring towns), and Wayland’s three legislative representatives: State Sen. Becca Rausch and State Reps. Carmine Gentile and Alice Peisch. Executive Director of U.U. Mass Action Laura Wagner, an experienced immigration activist, will moderate. More details online here.

Last November, political newcomer Becca Rausch, a Democrat, won an upset victory over Republican Richard Ross to become Massachusetts State Senator for Norfolk, Bristol, and Middlesex counties. The Delvena Theater Group presents W.C. Fields and Mae West at the Council on Aging’s Valentine’s Day Afternoon Tea and Theater, Thurs. Picasso: An Art Matters Presentation
On Wednesday, February 27 at 1:30pm in the Town Building’s Large Hearing Room, join us for an Art Matters Gallery Presentation on Picasso. Whether you swear by him or at him, Picasso was undeniably the most successful and influential artist of the 20th century. He made more than 50,000 works of art in so many different styles that nearly everyone viewing his work says at some point, “I didn’t know Picasso did that!” Join us for a look at, and discussion about, the many styles and stories of this giant of modern art. Wayland Summer Strings Announces 2019 Dates
For the sixth consecutive year, Whitney Tandon, the Wayland Public School district’s strings director for Grades 4 – 8, will be leading a one-week chamber music program for young musicians entering Grades 6 – 9. Wayland Summer Strings will be held at Wayland High School July 29 through August 2 from 12:30 pm – 3:30 pm. Enrollment will begin in the spring through Wayland School Community Programs, Community Education, and will be announced via All Schools News distributed to district families on Wednesdays and through local media. Musicians engage in small ensemble rehearsals, enjoy fun musical activities, and come together on Friday for an ensemble performance. Families and friends are invited to the Friday performance.
If an entering Grade 5 student has at least two years of professional private lessons, families may email Tandon to see if the repertoire and expectations are suitable for the student. Wayland Recreation Summer Camps & Spring Programs – registration starts February 12. Registration for all Wayland Recreation summer camps starts on Tuesday, February 12 at 6:30pm. With camps available for kids ages 3.5 through 8th grade (and CIT programs for 9th & 10th graders), we’ve got something for everyone. We’re also hiring for summer camp and beach positions too. RAD: Rape Aggression Defense course to run in March. The R.A.D. System was designed to develop and enhance the options of self- defense, so they become viable considerations to the woman who is attacked. The Rape Aggression Defense Systems is a program of realistic, self-defense tactics and techniques. The R.A.D. System is a comprehensive course for women that begins with awareness, prevention, risk reduction and avoidance, while progressing onto the basics of hands-on self-defense training. R.A.D. is not a martial arts program. Courses are taught by certified R.A.D. instructors and consist of 12 hours of hands on training. This is a no nonsense, practical self-defense program that offers advanced self-defense courses that build upon the Basic Physical Defense System. The Rape Aggression Defense System is the only program that offers a LIFETIME return and practice policy anywhere in the United States or Canada.
When: The class will total 12 hours and be conducted in 4 sessions (March 12th, 14th, 19th and 21st, 6-9pm)

Vokes Players announce its production of Peter and the Starcatcher, directed by Katie Swimm. Performances will be held at Beatrice Herford’s Vokes Theatre, Route 20 in Wayland from February 21 through March 9, Thursday-Saturday evenings at 8pm with a 2pm matinee on Saturdays, March 2 and 9. Peter and the Starcatcher tells the story of three orphaned boys who are sold into slavery at the same time that a special assignment is being undertaken by Lord Aster and his daughter Molly for the Queen. Descriptive language and staging tell a story of two ships on the ocean, one carrying “star stuff,” the other carrying a young boy without a name, without a family, and without a purpose. When these ships and missions collide, this unnamed boy’s fate becomes entwined with magic, danger, a girl with special powers, an evil pirate captain, and yes, a crocodile. Wayland Fire Department announces Open Burning Season.Open burning season runs from January 15th to May 1st. A valid permit obtained from the local Fire Department is required. The Fire Chief reserves the right to deny open burning on any day due to weather or environmental conditions. The Fire Department will begin issuing open burning permits beginning on January 15. There is no cost for the burn permit. Details are online here.
Pegasus Summer Program Announces 2019 Dates. Pegasus, the district’s summer enrichment program, announces its session dates for 2019: Session 1, June 24 – July 12, and Session 2, July 15 – August 2. Online registration for the preschool – Entering Grade Six program will begin in late January, and the registration opening date will be announced in All Schools News. Wayland Youth Lacrosse Registration is Now Open for the 2019 Spring Season. Registration for the 2019 spring youth lacrosse season is now open for Kindergarten through Eighth Grade players. Wayland Youth Lacrosse is proud to offer the boys and girls in Wayland another season of playing lacrosse, one of the fastest-growing, most popular sports in Massachusetts. Our Town and Select Teams are comprised of student-athletes who have a wide-range of lacrosse skills, including new players who are just beginning their lacrosse game and skilled players who have been shooting on the net for years. All teams and levels are committed to developing the whole player and focus on teamwork as well as character and skill development. Select Teams offer players an additional competitive opportunity to take their lacrosse skills to the next level. The season runs from the end of March through early June with our Laxapalooza W-Day in the middle of May. Golden Tones chorus celebrates 30 years of feeling good through singing!
If you enjoy singing and dancing to pop classics and show tunes, come to a rehearsal at the Wayland Senior Center. There are no auditions and no attendance requirements, only a friendly group of music-lovers from all over MetroWest. The chorus, now 30 years young, performs almost 50 concerts a year, many to disadvantaged audiences and also at community events and schools. Love music? You know… it is never too late to go back to your instrument or start a new one! One of our members went back to his violin at age 87 after not playing for 70 years! We have a Concert Band (woodwinds, brass & percussion) and a String Ensemble (violin, viola, cello & bass) and range in age from 30-something to 90.
