* Moving story about fallen WWII veterans from Wayland on Memorial Day. After two days of rain over Memorial Day weekend, the rain stopped suddenly on Monday morning and Wayland’s Memorial Day ceremony took place under cloudy skies. The parade was canceled for a second year in a row due to the pandemic. However, the inspiring and moving program at Lakeview Cemetery more than made up for the traditional march. [paywall]
* Wayland looking at water dispensing stations in light of PFAS problem. Town officials are looking at bids on a new filtration system for the Happy Hollow wellfield to bring the level of per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) below 20 parts per trillion, in addition to a bid on potential water dispensing stations for residents to utilize. * Wayland Boy Saw Smoke And Took Action — Now He’s Hailed As Hero. f you still remember the advice “stop, drop and roll,” local firefighters probably visited your classroom in elementary school to teach you about fire safety. It was a visit from Wayland firefighters to Luke Canterbury’s school that helped him guide his family through a potentially dangerous situation last year.
* Wayland Council on Aging hosts first open-invitation event since March 2020. A few dozen senior Wayland residents gathered outside the Town Building recently to “Celebrate Our Strength” at an outdoor open house hosted by the Wayland Council on Aging. May is Older Americans Month, and this year’s theme recognized the strength and resilience of older adults. This was the first in-person, open-invitation event the Council on Aging hosted since March 2020.
Forty Wayland residents to participate in the 2021 Pan-Mass Challenge. Locals will cycle with the goal of raising $52 million for Dana-Farber Cancer Institute. On August 7 and 8, more than 6,000 riders, including 40 participants from Wayland, will take part in the Pan-Mass Challenge (PMC), a two-day 211-mile bike-a-thon across Massachusetts, with the goal of raising $52 million for cancer research and patient care at Dana-Farber Cancer Institute (Dana-Farber). Donations sought for Eagle Scout project to build garden bed at Bent Park. Michael is a Life Scout in Troop 1 seeking to build a raised garden bed for residents at Bent Park for his Eagle Scout project. Currently, there are only four garden beds, which forces the center to turn away some senior citizens wishing to tend to them. The Wayland Community Fund (WCF) provides short-term emergency financial assistance to Wayland residents who have lived in Wayland for at least one year. WCF provides funding for basic needs such as utilities, rent, food, medical bills, and other living expenses. * Summer Reading Program for children in grades pre-K to Grade 5: Starts June 14! The theme for this year’s Summer Reading Program for children in grades pre-K to Grade 5 is Tails & Tales. We will be bringing you a blend of virtual and in-person (outside) activities featuring animals, real and imaginary. Highlights include virtual zookeeper chats with Buttonwood Park Zoo and Roger Williams Park Zoo, and a virtual bug show with Joy Marzolf of The Joys of Nature. We will also offer in-person outdoor STEM and craft programs, scavenger hunts, and weekly take and make crafts. Children will keep track of their reading online or on paper logs and will earn virtual badges for time reading, for attending programs, and for completing fun craft and STEM challenges. Every child who registers can pick up a goody bag at the library. Participants will also earn raffle tickets for prizes!

BOH meeting with MassDep to answer questions on PFAS, June 14. The Board of Health will be holding a meeting via zoom on Monday June 14, 2021 at 5:30pm during which Mark Smith Ph.D., M.S., Director Office of Research and Standards of MassDEP will provide a presentation on PFAS and how the MCL of 20 PPT for public drinking wells was determined. Questions from the Board of Health, Board of Selectmen and Board of Public Works will be answered during the meeting. Public comment will also be provided after the presentation. The meeting will be recorded and available for viewing on Waycam.

Summer Concert Series begins Thursday, June 17. The 10th annual Wayland Community Summer Concert Series begins Thursday evening June 17 from 7 to 8pm in the Courtyard behind the Wayland Town Building. It runs for five Thursdays, through July 15. On June 17, enjoy the band Club Soda, back by popular demand to play your Top 40 favorites. Brought to you by the Council on Aging, these are community events for all ages! TerraCorps/AmericCorps Job Opportunities at SVT. Sudbury Valley Trustees (SVT), a regional conservation organization, is seeking to fill two TerraCorps/AmeriCorps positions for the 2021-2022 service year. These full-time, 11-month positions provide wonderful experience for anyone interested in a career in land conservation or community engagement. TerraCorps is a Massachusetts-based organization that prepares emerging leaders to help conserve land for people and wildlife. It is affiliated with the national AmeriCorps program that annually engages more than 75,000 Americans in service at nonprofit organizations, schools, and public agencies. TerraCorps Members receive a living allowance, an education award, and additional benefits. Office Hours with Senator Rausch: Senator Rausch has shifted her monthly in-person office hours to remote, virtual office hours held on Fridays. Conversations with the Senator and her staff will take place via phone call or video conference. During these virtual office hours, residents from any part of the Norfolk, Bristol and Middlesex District are welcome to share their questions and opinions on state issues with Senator Rausch and her staff. Transportation for Wayland Seniors. Under a new, grant-funded program, the Wayland Council on Aging (COA) can now arrange for free taxi rides for seniors who have no other way to get to non-emergency medical appointments or other essential errands such as grocery shopping, visits to food pantries, or to pharmacies to pick up prescriptions. The program is funded by a Metropolitan Area Planning Council/ MassDevelopment grant designed to offer short-term support to communities during the COVID-19 pandemic. Wayland residents age 60 and over who find themselves without transportation options may contact the COA to request a ride. COA staff will review requests for compliance with the grant’s guidelines. For those who qualify, staff will make arrangements with either Tommy’s Taxi and JFK Transportation, who are partnering with the COA under the terms of the grant. Ride requests must be made at least one full business day in advance. The program runs through December 31, 2020, or until the funds are depleted.
