* Garden Club installs library statue for late member. When Pat Jones passed away in April 2019, her family asked that gifts in her memory be made to the Wayland Garden Club, a true passion in Pat’s life. Pat lived in Wayland for well over 50 years, raised her children here, and participated in many activities — in particular the Wayland Garden Club, of which she was president from 1971 to 1973. Forty Wayland residents to participate in the 2021 Pan-Mass Challenge. Locals will cycle with the goal of raising $52 million for Dana-Farber Cancer Institute. On August 7 and 8, more than 6,000 riders, including 40 participants from Wayland, will take part in the Pan-Mass Challenge (PMC), a two-day 211-mile bike-a-thon across Massachusetts, with the goal of raising $52 million for cancer research and patient care at Dana-Farber Cancer Institute (Dana-Farber). GoFundMe by Wayland Veterinarian to Save Dogs. Wayland veterinarian Amy Shroff is organizing a GoFundMe fundraiser to organize the rescue of several dogs from Russia currently living in terrible conditions. They will be transported to the United States, provided medical treatment and then be available for adoption. Time is of the essence as the CDC has new regulations going into effect in mid-July which will ban such imports in the future. Full information on the fundraiser is available online here.

Fundraising efforts benefit The Jimmy Fund and Dana Farber in honor of the strongest 7-year old we know, Chloe Marzilli. Donations sought for Eagle Scout project to build garden bed at Bent Park. Michael is a Life Scout in Troop 1 seeking to build a raised garden bed for residents at Bent Park for his Eagle Scout project. Currently, there are only four garden beds, which forces the center to turn away some senior citizens wishing to tend to them. Wayland Community Fund serving Wayland residents temporarily in need of financial assistance. Please call us if you need help!
The Wayland Community Fund (WCF) provides short-term emergency financial assistance to Wayland residents who have lived in Wayland for at least one year. WCF provides funding for basic needs such as utilities, rent, food, medical bills, and other living expenses. Please call us if you need help with your bills, 508-358-3624 or go to the town website for an application.
Join the MRC! New Medical Reserve Corps Volunteers are always needed! We have a great group of volunteers, however, we would love to recruit new members. If you are interested in helping out your community and would like to volunteer please contact the Health Department at Health@wayland.ma.us.

* Summer Reading Program for children in grades pre-K to Grade 5: Starts June 14! The theme for this year’s Summer Reading Program for children in grades pre-K to Grade 5 is Tails & Tales. We will be bringing you a blend of virtual and in-person (outside) activities featuring animals, real and imaginary. Highlights include virtual zookeeper chats with Buttonwood Park Zoo and Roger Williams Park Zoo, and a virtual bug show with Joy Marzolf of The Joys of Nature. We will also offer in-person outdoor STEM and craft programs, scavenger hunts, and weekly take and make crafts. Children will keep track of their reading online or on paper logs and will earn virtual badges for time reading, for attending programs, and for completing fun craft and STEM challenges. Every child who registers can pick up a goody bag at the library. Participants will also earn raffle tickets for prizes!
* Summer Reading Program for Teens: Starts June 14! Teens will keep track of their reading online and will earn badges for books read, for writing reviews, for attending programs, and for completing take and make crafts. Teens will also earn raffle tickets for prizes! Programming highlights include a Comics Making Workshop with Jarrett Lerner, Teens Cooking Green, and an Ocean Tides Wall Hanging Craft, all offered through zoom. In addition, there will be weekly take and make crafts to pick up at the library.
Free Math Tutoring by WHS Students: Deluxe Thinkers is Back.Deluxe Thinkers will be coming back this summer. Deluxe Thinkers is a tutoring service comprised of Wayland High School students who are here to help your child with math, and they are completely free! They work with any grade from kindergarten to 8th grade. This summer, they will be doing the same format as last year offering one-on-one tutoring and self-learning plan options. Town of Wayland Senior Property Tax Work-Off Program Returns; Now Accepting Applications. After a year’s hiatus due to the COVID-19 Pandemic, the Town of Wayland is proud to be offering the Senior Property Tax Work-Off Program for Fiscal Year 2022 (July 1, 2021 – June 30, 2022). This program is a win-win for both our residents and the community. There is an increasingly diverse type of positions available in the Property Tax Work-Off Program. Town Departments identify specific needs for the fiscal year, and the COA and HR match an applicant’s interest and skill set with available departmental positions. Work-Off applications are available beginning June 16, 2021 and must be completed and delivered to the COA by Friday, July 2, 2021 at 12:00pm noon to be included in the lottery. The lottery determines the order in which applicants are considered for placement. Applications received after July 2, 2021 at noon will still be accepted, but those names will be placed at the bottom of the list and then processed in received order. Please read the Tax Work-Off Program’s guidelines at the link below and understand the commitment prior to applying. Summer Concert Series. The 10th annual Wayland Community Summer Concert Series, Thursday evenings in the Courtyard behind the Wayland Town Building through July 15. Brought to you by the Council on Aging, these are community events for all ages! Bring a lawn chair or blanket. Concerts will be cancelled in inclement weather; check the COA website for updates. TerraCorps/AmericCorps Job Opportunities at SVT. Sudbury Valley Trustees (SVT), a regional conservation organization, is seeking to fill two TerraCorps/AmeriCorps positions for the 2021-2022 service year. These full-time, 11-month positions provide wonderful experience for anyone interested in a career in land conservation or community engagement. TerraCorps is a Massachusetts-based organization that prepares emerging leaders to help conserve land for people and wildlife. It is affiliated with the national AmeriCorps program that annually engages more than 75,000 Americans in service at nonprofit organizations, schools, and public agencies. TerraCorps Members receive a living allowance, an education award, and additional benefits. As a participant in the TerraCorps program, SVT has openings for a Land Stewardship Coordinator and a Community Engagement Coordinator. These positions will run from August 30, 2021, to July 29, 2022, and will be based out of SVT’s office in Sudbury. Office Hours with Senator Rausch: Senator Rausch has shifted her monthly in-person office hours to remote, virtual office hours held on Fridays. Conversations with the Senator and her staff will take place via phone call or video conference. During these virtual office hours, residents from any part of the Norfolk, Bristol and Middlesex District are welcome to share their questions and opinions on state issues with Senator Rausch and her staff. Any constituent may reserve a 15-minute appointment. Click here to sign up for a slot.
Transportation for Wayland Seniors. Under a new, grant-funded program, the Wayland Council on Aging (COA) can now arrange for free taxi rides for seniors who have no other way to get to non-emergency medical appointments or other essential errands such as grocery shopping, visits to food pantries, or to pharmacies to pick up prescriptions. The program is funded by a Metropolitan Area Planning Council/ MassDevelopment grant designed to offer short-term support to communities during the COVID-19 pandemic. Wayland residents age 60 and over who find themselves without transportation options may contact the COA to request a ride. COA staff will review requests for compliance with the grant’s guidelines. For those who qualify, staff will make arrangements with either Tommy’s Taxi and JFK Transportation, who are partnering with the COA under the terms of the grant. Ride requests must be made at least one full business day in advance. The program runs through December 31, 2020, or until the funds are depleted.
