Wayland boy hit by car while riding bike to school. A 14-year-old Wayland boy was injured Tuesday morning when he was hit by a car while riding his bicycle to school, officials said. The boy apparently rode into the intersection of Parkland Drive and West Plain Street around 7:05 a.m. and collided with a car that was turning left into Parkland Drive, said Wayland Police Lieutenant Sean Gibbons.

Property taxes to increase for next fiscal year. Time to dig a little deeper into the bank account, because taxes are going up. Selectmen voted unanimously last week to set a single rate for all property types. The average homeowner tax bill in fiscal 2019 is $13,719, compared to $12,906 in the last fiscal year, a 6.3 percent increase. [ed note: we changed the headline from the one in the Crier because the one used in the article is inaccurate.]
* Wayland parents scramble for child care after school start times change. Last month’s School Committee vote to adopt later start times next year at the middle and high schools has led to a new, but expected, dilemma for school officials: a greater need for after-school child care for younger students who will be getting out an hour earlier. A recent parent survey puts the number of students in need of such care at approximately 80, and Superintendent Arthur Unobskey said he has contacted the Recreation Department to find more locations and programs to satisfy the demand. He’s expected to report back to the committee on Feb. 11 with possible plans.
* Eversource Planning Power Inspections. Eversource utility company will conduct inspections and maintenance work on transmission structures in Framingham, Wayland and Sudbury using drones to inspect the equipment.
* Wayland school officials: No cheating concerns with math-test policy. Concerns about cheating had nothing to do with teachers telling high school students that they couldn’t take completed tests and quizzes home, according to school officials. Superintendent Arthur Unobskey made the statement Thursday to the Wayland School Committee.
* Students and local seniors bridge age gap in Wayland. A new program at WHS called “Sages and Seekers” brings together local seniors, or “Sages,” and high school students, or “Seekers.” The program is intended to help bridge today’s generation with longtime residents. By fostering discussion and sharing experiences, the students and seniors can discover how much they have in common.
* Q & A with Wayland’s new town administrator. The spotlight on “Wayland Weekly Buzz” was Wayland’s new town administrator, Louise Miller, who has been on the job since early September. Executive producer Ken Isaacson conducted the interview.
Some parents want to know why students can’t bring test papers home. Superintendent Arthur Unobskey said high school students should get their tests back when they ask for them and should be able to bring the actual papers home. Unobskey made the comment after he heard complaints from some parents at Monday night’s Policy Subcommittee meeting that some teachers are telling students they can’t bring tests home.

The Town of Wayland Wants You to Volunteer! The town has a variety of volunteer opportunities that call for light, medium, or heavy time commitments and for specific skills or no particular skills at all, only an interest in the board’s work and willingness to learn. We-the Board of Selectmen-are providing you with information that we hope will pique your interest. This column focuses on the new Cable Advisory Committee (CAC).
The CAC has three principal responsibilities: 1) negotiate the terms of the renewal Cable TV licenses with Wayland’s service providers, Comcast and Verizon; 2) recommend that the Board of Selectmen grant these licenses; and 3) monitor the performance of the licensees during the ascertainment process to ensure compliance with the license terms and conditions. We expect that the five member committee will meet monthly or every other month beginning in 2019. Helpful-but not required-skills include negotiating experience, interest in or some knowledge of our local cable operations, ability to understand contracts, and common sense. If you have questions or are interested in being considered to fill this or any town board position, please email Teri Hegerty in the Selectmen’s office. We look forward to hearing from you!

The Wayland Community Fund serves Wayland residents who need financial assistance. The WCF is a volunteer organization that provides assistance to Wayland residents in financial need, paying utility bills, rent, medical expenses and many other items. It pays bills, it does not provide cash. The organization was originally funded by a bequest from the late Suzanne Leavitt. Contributions from Wayland residents now provide sufficient funding. The WCF is staffed by five volunteers who cover all expenses. As a result, 100% of every contribution goes toward helping people in Wayland. Since its founding 20 years ago the WCF has provided more than $550,000 to Wayland residents in financial need. The Wayland Community Fund can be reached at 508-358-3624.More information on the fund, including who it serves, and how to donate, is available on the Wayland town website online here.
