Wayland LibrarySTARTING JULY 1—EXPANDED HOURS!
Actually, they’re our old hours, but we lost them in 2010. Now they’ve been restored by the town, so you can enjoy the library until 9 p.m. on Thursdays and 6 p.m. on Fridays. That’s four more hours a week to take advantage of all our great services!

SUMMER HOURS
Our summer weekend hours start on Saturday, June 27. During the summer, the library will be open on Saturdays from 10 a.m.-1 p.m. and closed on Sundays. We will be closed over the Independence Day weekend from Friday, July 3, through Sunday, July 5.

On Saturday, June 13, at 2 p.m., 1996 Wayland High School graduate Carrie (Schneider) Russell will be at the library to talk about her book, “Drowning Cactus.” She describes it as literary fiction that explores the transformative power of wilderness. The novel follows a cactus thief and an urban gardening instructor on a journey across the American landscape, from the Sonoran Desert to Walden Pond.

PIZZA/STUDY NIGHTS FOR WHS STUDENTS
During Wayland High School finals week, the library will be open late until 11 p.m. on the evenings of June 17 and 18 for high school students who want to study for exams. We will serve pizza a little after 5 p.m. on those evenings to teens who are here during the dinner hour and will also provide some snacks throughout the evening.

SUMMER READING FOR KIDS
Summer is almost here! The theme for this year’s Summer Reading Program for children in grades preK-5 is “Every Hero Has a Story.” The library will kick off the program with a comic mime performance by Robert Rivest on Thursday, June 25, at 2 p.m. There will be other great programs throughout the summer: a puppet show, a live animal program, drop-in crafts, and visits from local heroes, including a firefighter and a police officer. Registration for “Every Hero Has a Story” begins on Tuesday, June 23. Children can sign up at the library (and get a super hero goodie bag) or online at the Children’s’ section of waylandlibrary.org. Kids can keep track of their reading online or on a paper log. We will celebrate the children’s reading with an ice cream bash on Thursday, August 13.

TEEN SUMMER READING
The theme for the Teen Summer Reading program for youth in grades 6-12 is “Unmasked.” Teens who register online at the Teen section of waylandlibrary.org and write at least one original book review will win a prize. There will also be programs for teens this summer. Registration for this program also beings on Tuesday, June 23.

FOYER EXHIBIT
Wayland resident David Keevil is an artist, musician, and clinical psychologist who grew up in Lincoln. His exhibition, “The Piggyback Project,” is a collection of 28 studio photographs of people carrying their parents piggyback. The photographs were made by David and his son, Griffin, in the year following the death of David’s father. The photographs are displayed as a slide show loop on a large screen in the library’s foyer.
