HOLIDAY HOURS The Library will close at noon on December 24 and will be closed on December 25 for Christmas. We will close at 3 p.m. on December 31 and will be closed on January 1 for New Year’s Day.

FAMILY SING-ALONG WITH DAVID POLANSKY During the Wayland Center Holiday Open House, on Sunday, December 6, from 3-4 p.m., musician David Polansky will get us all singing traditional and new songs that celebrate the winter season and holidays.

CALLING ALL TEEN CRAFTERS! On Thursday, December 10, from 2:45-4 p.m. we will have beading, duct tape crafts, knitting, crafts made from recycled books, and more in the Raytheon Room for crafting. For teens in grades 6-12.

DRUM CLINIC/DEMO WITH KEVIN FORTUNATO Rhythm is for everyone! Explore the drum set with educator, author, clinician, and Wayland resident Kevin Fortunato on in the library’s Raytheon Room on Sunday, December 13, from 3-4 p.m. Whether you’re a novice, a seasoned pro, or have no experience at all, come attend this entertaining and educational exploration of drumming. From jazz to Latin and rock, Kevin will demonstrate techniques, coordination, and pretty much everything in between.

BOOK-A-LIBRARIAN The librarians at the Wayland Public Library love to help patrons, but sometimes they need more time than is available on a drop-in basis. With the Book-a-Librarian service, librarians will meet with patrons in half hour sessions to personally address such things as research questions, technology assistance, downloading ebooks, resume/job search assistance and more. UPCOMING KIDS’ PROGRAMS

  • Book Buddies Monday, December 7, 3-4 p.m. for children in grades K to 3 with a parent/caregiver. This parent/child book group is jointly run with the WCPA, but all are welcome. This month’s book is “The Giving Tree” by Shel Silverstein. We will discuss the book and make our own Giving Tree.
  • Decorate a Gingerbread House Wednesday, December 9, 3:30-4:30 p.m. for ages 4 and up. We will listen to gingerbread stories and then decorate a Gingerbread House and Gingerbread Men.
  • Drop-in Winter and Holiday Crafts Wednesday, December 16, 3-4 p.m. for ages 4 and up. Kids will librarian Elise Katz and make fabulous crafts for the season.
  • Zumba Kids Jr. Tuesday, December 29, at 10:30 a.m. for children ages 2.5-4 years old. Rhythm and dance program led by Patty Howard of H2K Happy Healthy Kids Fitness Studio.
  • Parent/Child Book Group Wednesday, December 16, from 7-8 p.m. for 4th and 5th graders, with a parent. This month’s book is Crenshaw by Katherine Applegate.
  • Reel Time: Shaun the Sheep Movie Wednesday, December 30, from 3-4:30 p.m. Runtime 85 minutes. When Shaun decides to take the day off and have some fun, he gets a little more action than he bargained for. A great family film. Rated PG.

LIBRARY TECH WORKSHOPS We are offering some introductory workshops to help you keep up with technology. Here’s what’s coming up:

  • overdriveIntro to the iPhone/iPad, Wednesday, December 9, 2 p.m. You have some experience with your iPhone/iPad, but feel like you need some help with the basics. We’ll discuss organizing icons, the difference between SIRI and dictation, battery life, and other basics of these versatile and complex devices. Be sure to bring your iPhone or iPad to class.
  • OverDrive: The Library eBook App, Monday, December 14, 2-3 p.m. Discover how easy it is to find, reserve, and download library ebooks and eAudiobooks. You’ll also learn how to modify the print size and color, and how to create bookmarks. Bring your Apple ID and password.
  • Commonwealth Catalog Workshop, Monday, December 14, 10-11 a.m. The Commonwealth Catalog (ComCAT for short) has now replaced our old “Virtual Catalog” and will soon give you self-service access to every requestable public library book in Massachusetts, as well as to some academic collections. Come learn more about this valuable resource.
  • google-calendar-100377775-origGoogle Calendar Workshop, Tuesday, January 12, 2-3:30 p.m. Would you like to access your calendar from any computer or smart-phone? Learn how to create a Google calendar that offers reminders of upcoming events. You can layer calendars to see work, personal, and other calendars simultaneously or one at a time. Bring your calendar of upcoming events (and your laptop if you have one) to create a calendar you can use right away! We will have some laptops available for student use. Google Calendar requires having a Gmail account.

DECEMBER BOOK GROUPS FOR ADULTS

DECEMBER FOREIGN FILM Our next foreign film, Devdas will screen on Tuesday, December 15, at 6:30 p.m. in the Raytheon Room. Based on a classic Indian novel by Sarat Chandra Chattopadhy. (185 minutes, in Hindi with English subtitles.)

GENEALOGY GROUP FORMING Want to explore your family history or are you currently in the middle of a genealogy project? Come to the library where we plan to offer monthly opportunities to connect with fellow genealogists for inspiration and support. Librarian Rachel Sideman-Kurtz will be on hand with guidance and resources. She is also available for one-on-one research assistance at other times to get you started or help find a missing piece of information. For more information, contact Rachel at rsideman@minlib.net. ONE HUNDRED YEARS OF POLICING IN WAYLAND On Tuesday, January 5, at 7 p.m. Wayland Police Chief Robert Irving will present our January Great Decisions talk. He will discuss the many changes in policing over the last 100 years, both here in Wayland and across the country. And as we begin this anniversary year for the Wayland department, the Chief will speak about challenges that law enforcement faces on a local and national level.

DECEMBER EXHIBITS In December the library foyer contains landscape paintings by award-winning artist Jeannette Corbett. Some of our talented Wayland quilters will be exhibiting their work in the Raytheon Room for a portion of December.

HANDWORK GROUP This group, led by Ann Moses, welcomes any adult who quilts, embroiders, knits, or does any type of hand work. We meet on the first Wednesday of each month from 10-12 a.m. to share ideas and resources in the Raytheon Room. If you have any questions please call or email annbmoses@gmail.com or 508-358-7113.
