Charles Alward, Spencer Richardson, Joseph Loggie, and Albert Ringer: have you ever wondered why these names sit atop road signs at four intersections in town? Who were these fellows and what are their stories? Well, we have some answers for the curious! The Wayland High School History Project and the Wayland Historical Society have teamed up yet again, collaborating on the ongoing 100th anniversary of WWI to discover how the town reacted to President Wilson’s call to “make the world safe for democracy.” Learn how these four men lost their lives and dozens more joined Uncle Sam’s American Expeditionary Force a century ago. Students in Kevin Delaney’s US History classes have been poring through newspaper databases, local primary sources, family memory, and genealogical & archival records to piece together the stories of Wayland doughboys who answered the call to arms in an era just about out of living memory’s reach.
